My wife dragged me off to the theater to see "Titanic" all those years ago. The "sacrifice scene" where Jack (Leonardo di Caprio) succumbs to hypothermia and sinks below the waves, so that Rose (Kate Winslet) can survive, was of course, pivotal to the plot line. I didn't realize there was an uproar among movie goers, over whether the door frame floating Rose could have accommodated Jack as well, enabling them both to survive. Turns out the size of this life raft was purposely crafted so that only one could fit aboard. (Both surviving would have been the Disney cartoon version). Anyone seriously doubting the logistics of the scene could have simply bought the balsa wood raft prop at auction, for a mere $718,750, like some rich fan did. I guess Jack's sacrifice was inevitable ... after all, he (and the rest of us) had already seen Rose in her birthday suit earlier in the film, so what else did he have to live for?
Other important film items up for grabs at auction that were sold:
Winslet’s chiffon dress from Titanic’s finale, which sold for $125,000, Indiana Jones’s bullwhip from The Temple of Doom $525,000 and Jack Nicholson’s axe from The Shining $125,000.
The can of shaving cream used by Wayne Knight to smuggle out dinosaur embryos in Jurassic Park made $250,000 and a blaster carried by Carrie Fisher in Return of the Jedi took $150,000.
