I was sitting at the bar at an eatery I frequent a few days ago and had quite the experience. Mrs. L didn’t feel up to going so I was by myself. I took a bite of my burger and it didn’t go down good. It was very uncomfortable so I took a drink of my beer thinking it would wash it down. That was a mistake. That took me from uncomfortable to unable to breathe. I got a bit excited at this point.
I was sitting near the end of the bar so I jumped up, still unable to breathe, and started ramming my stomach into the corner of the bar. After a couple of tries I hear a female voice ask “Are you okay?”. I shook my head no as I continued. Then, I felt someone start smacking me on the back and then I felt someone (maybe the same person) grab me around the stomach. After a few of those, it finally dislodged and I started gasping for air like a fish out of water and coughing like I had emphysema. About the time I was getting my faculties about me, the paramedics showed up. The firehouse only a couple of blocks away. They checked me out and hung out for a bit to make sure I was okay.
Fortunately, there was a fellow customer that knew what to do and, other than being sore for a couple of days, I was fine.
Side note: This is the second time in my life this has happened to me. I was, I think, 5 or so the first time, but I remember it vividly.

You can thank Mr. Heimlich and the person that used it on you in that order.

Nothing is quite so panic inducing as being suddenly unable to breathe. So glad there was someone right there who knew what to do for you! Definitely sounds like one of those "pay it forward" situations, where one day you'll be "that guy" who leaps in to save the day.

Ho. Lee. Crap. Glad there was someone there who knew what to do. How terrifying. Did you get a chance to thank the person who helped you?

It's something how quickly normal turns to terrifying. I like mandarin oranges, but the juice from the little segments does have a way of squirting into the back of the throat setting off the gasp reflex. Also, how often do people choke by inhaling TicTacs? They seem to be designed for that purpose.

The closest I ever came to choking was on some refrigerated Mackinaw Island fudge. This was at our cottage in the Canadian north so no calling 911. I scarfed some down and it went into the wrong pipe. My wife heard me weezing and ran over and tried the heimlich but that didn't work. Instead of panicking I waved my wife off and could sense the blockage dissolving. A few moments later I did some undignified horks and hacks and could breathe again.
My eating habits are like a Labrador Retriever finding a dropped ribeye steak. No matter how hard I try I'm almost always the first one done at the table. Maybe it's a genetic thing, my dad was the same way. Then again, our youngest who is not my biological son is the only other one who can outpace me.

And to think that masticating in public was frowned upon…

Amazing how simple the Heimlich is yet how unbelievably effective it can be. Glad you are doing ok.
I have successfully applied it once, I was probably as scared as the victim.

I saved my young son once with the Heimlich. It was awesome. As I said earlier, this was my second go around. I was a little kid the first time. I got choked on a hot dog. The Heimlich wasn’t around then. Fortunately, a few smacks on the back did the trick.

I spend a lot of time by myself at my mountain summer home. This very thing comes to mind as I stuff food into my mouth. I tell myself to slow down, chew, and live!
Total blockage isn’t the only danger. An acquaintance of mine lost her husband when he aspirated a potato chip.
