Is that where all this started?
I'm referring, of course, to the delusion that pop musicians are wise beyond their years and, almost by definition, wellsprings of deep-meaning commentary, their every word worthy of our rapt attentiveness. Did all that start with Bob Dylan and Beatles interviews, which were supposedly brim full of stunning truisms, insightful philosophical revelations, shocking wisdom, pithy observations and cryptic allusions, all masked with witty irony, made by these purveyors of auditory art? I don't recall ever hearing The Coasters or Buddy Holly offer their views about the cosmos, the human condition or the meaning of life. It was more like, "yes, Dick, that's right: we do have a new single coming out this week"...and that was pretty much it.
I was half watching the TV and learned that "Shakira" had a shocking announcement to make: "boys don't like 'Barbie'!"
Oh, say it ain't so! What world-altering nugget is coming next? "Girls don't like 'G.I. Joe'"?
Let's ask Shakira, I'm sure she'll know...

We tend to expect more from our idols than they've the capacity to deliver.

About the only one with an opinion I would pay much attention is Jeff Baxter.

Not quite what she said, there’s a bit more to it than you’re making it seem.

Nah It's just young people learning stuff for themselves.
Along the way they will learn that old folks have already learnt this when they were young.

Not quite what she said, there’s a bit more to it than you’re making it seem. My attention span has gotten way too short to wait around for context.

I think Jim Morrison had some moments when he nailed this.

delusion that pop musicians are wise beyond their years Well, Buddy Holly was 22 when he died, so he never really had any chance to offer much wisdom one way or the other. I'd also like to point out that Shakira is almost 50 and was speaking as a (well-beyond) middle-aged mom. With more than twice the lived life experience I'd trust her perspective in parenting/culture over Buddy, which was the narrow context. Who would I rather have a beer with? That's another question entirely.

Did you see where John Mellencamp had a hissy fit when an audience member yelled at him to shut up and play some music? He abruptly ended the concert after yelling back at the guy who didn't seem to want to hear John's wisdom.

Entertainers generally live in a pretty sheltered world. They're not necessarily the best group of people to rely on for "wisdom", no matter how crafty they deliver their lines. I abandoned the notion of "heroes" a long time ago. Admiration is about all I'll invest in some entertainers and it's generally limited to their skills to entertain.

I'm amazed at whom people will look to for guidance about living life, finding happiness and even who to vote for. Too many people think that a guy who makes millions acting is somehow better equipped to figure that stuff out than they are.
Sorry, have pecs and nice hair isn't quite the resume I'm looking for when seeking advice on the important stuff. Maybe if he's recommending hair care products.....
