How fragile and/or easily offended must we be? I was musing over the content warning on a TV show the other night: "smoking, coarse language, violence, etc...."
I wonder how far this could expand. For instance ....
"Fat mocking, sibling rivalry, farting, cruelty to msquitoes, lip smacking, pre-teen wedgies, cracking knuckles, animal nudity ....."
What you got?

And, of course, there are the warnings in California that "contents of this programming may cause cancer"...

Nobody ever said we have a right to not be offended. Not sure when or why that became a thing. If we decide that people have a right to not be offended, what happens if I'm offended by people who are easily offended?

Believing in rugged individualism, I'm self offending. Wouldn't think of putting such a burdensome responsibility on others...
You heard of those who are "self-effacing".
I'm "self-defacing".

The smoking one always gets me. Like, this movie is about 1960, there will literally be people smoking everywhere. Because people were literally smoking everywhere.
Everyone knows it exists, everyone sees people doing it if they venture out into the world…why do I need to be warned about seeing something that exists mundanely every day?

Warning, this movie contains poor writing built on an unlikely premise, lame dialog, poor direction and acting and ineffective sets.

Watched a WWII documentary last night ... hard to spot a US soldier who wasn't smoking!

And while we're at it, I've seen warnings that the programming has scenes of flashing lights, presumably to caution those who have some neurological disorder that may affect them. But they do seem to exclude muzzle flash and the 40 police cars in pursuit in the majority of their output.

In reality we should celebrate smokers, after all they pay $6.85 in tax per pack in NYC.
The things that tend to annoy me are never listed.

How about warnings about really offensive things:
"This film contains scenes of pan handling, people abandoning shopping carts, parking in red zones and using fistufls of coupons in the Express Lane"

I quit smoking in 1979 but today when you see pre- 1980’s movies and see people smoking at work and everywhere you look it seems weird now.

The best version I ever saw was on a public network in Alberta. On Friday movie night, they'd run the warining:
"Viewer Discretion Advised: The following film may contain scenes of nudity, violence and sexual situations. Not necessarily in that order."
