I have made about 4 speaker cabs in my life but that has been 15 years since the last one and frankly I am not sure I am up to it now. Maybe if I get my back fixed soon. Back to the point, I am trying to decide whether to build a single 12" speaker cab to suppliment my Katana Artist, make a 2 x 12 cab to replace my Katana cab OR Buy a ready built 2x12 cab with Tolex installed or buy one unfinished. I want a semi-open cab (center 1/3 center open) Please help. If you know someone who builds a decent cab won't kill the pocket book let me know.

I've made half a dozen of so combo and speaker cabs, and I'm totally done with it. I have no inclination (or tools) any more. A few years ago I had JD Newell make a 1x12 cab. It's very nice - Fender style, open back, black tolex. I'm pretty sure he'd do one to your specs - unfinished, semi-open, whatever. Don't know if he's the cheapest, but he's good. www.newellamps.com/

You can buy them 2nd hand all day long on fleabay and reverb.
You can also buy panel kits (all wood cut to size and finger-jointed, with speaker cutout on the baffle) for about $100. Some assembly required!
And you can easily make your own from solid wood multi-lam, quality ply or MDF. There's really no need to dovetail or finger joint the corners; you can use glue and pins or screws, and beef up each corner inside with a short batten glued in place. Building a speaker cab is only one rung up the woodworking ladder from making a cutting board.

I neither have the tools or expertise to dovetail and finger joint
Also, don't mind already Tolexed etc if it isn't costly. I thought I would attempt to tolex whatever cab for fun of it but frankly haven't Put Tolex on in over 50 years when a friend and I did my first cab. LOL

I see good deals for cabs on craigslist all the time. Given that I can make my own I've never seen a new one that I thought was worth the money. And I also don't care much about how an amp or cab looks or whether things match. I need to make a cab for one of my amps and have a sheet of light-weight plywood to try this time. I've used pine in the past, nice and light (but very boomy if it ain't covered with something) and also made a Thiele-type 1x12 out of birch multi-ply (heavy, heavy, heavy); but does sound nice with the back removed (made that in hopes of getting a good sound out of a JBL K-120; didn't work, thus it's now used with a different speaker and the back removed).
Anyway, I'd say keep tabs on the local CL postings. You should be able to find something decent, even loaded if that's what you want. Plus I assume that shipping for a 2x12 probably ain't too friendly.

If you don't want the hassle of covering with Tolex, a very cool option is spray-on bed liner for pickup trucks.
It dries to a rough texture with a semi-gloss finish--much like Tolex. It's seamless and it's a cinch to apply. And unlike Tolex, it's quite tough and dead simple to repair.
From a foot away it looks like the best Tolex job in the universe.

Peegoo, Thanks for the Nick Offerman video. Some helpful advice there even for the "Ignert" folks who can structure a sentence correctly LOL

I love building my own cabinets. I pick out some nice 1X12 clear pine, measure it up, cut, rout the edges, cut the telex, contact cement, corners, handle, feet, grill cloth. and then the speaker(s). For me a great way to spend time alone from the rest of the world.
