Thanks, that was cool. I don’t know why I’ve never owned one. The old P bass could use the company. I do like that Jazz growl.

I once had a USA Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling bass. It was an awesome bass in workmanship, quality, playability but growl off the charts. I sold it and went to Fender Jazz...still some growl but not as bad. Then George Edmonst (edmondsg on FDP) hooked me on TI Jazz Flats on Fender Jazz Bass. LaBella Low Tension Flats are also good with a little more tension than TI's. Been there ever since. I do like DR Silver Stars and Black Beauties (coated round wound) though. Using the same Flats on my P strangely enough it seems to have more growl than the Jazz basses I have, however it does have Seymour Duncan SCPB3 Quarter Pounders that are higher output than typical so that may attribute to some of it.

I've aquired an appriciation for the jazz growl over the years. It's a usable sound. Kind of like a lead boost on a guitar. It pushes the bass to midrange and top when it needs that kind of separation from the bottom. It's the skinny neck that's distracting "o) Though I've gotten really used to the Guild Starfire over the few years that I've owned it.

Since my previous post I lowered the Quarter Pounders on my P bass to near or barely peeking over the pickguard and now the tone is Awesome! Love this pickups

Very informative video.
For years the Jazz Bass was my favorite bass. I borrowed a friend's '66 for a couple of days and likedd it so much that my first new bass was a '71 Jazz Bass. Since I gigged7 nights a week for a few years my J Bass got rather battered. I sent the body in to the ;ocal music store to get it redone in walnut stain. During the down time I played a Danelectro dolpjin bass with the J Bass pickups and later on the first of a series of heavily modded Musicmasters with the J Bass pickups. I subsequently moved away from the Jazz Bass for quite awhile. My last two Jazz Basses were a MIM sunburst and a model not mentioned--the 1990's Kubicki preamp-equipped Jazz Plus.
However I moved into the Precision camp more recently for its rounder tone

Compared to the Jazz it has a more single faceted tone but one that Jazz can’t do

The Jazz Bass with its two pickups certainly has a broader palette of tones than the Precision Bass. I find that fifty years out I am more into getting my tonal palette from technique rather than from the twin pickups. But I don't regret a moment of playing a Jazz Bass.
