I was loaning my old drum machine to a friend, I warned him about the polarity (it was negative) of the power plug, since I lost my wall wart.
He was going to set his universal source to positive ("I'm an electrical engineer. I know that ALL electronic power sources are positive. Its the standard") I showed him the manual to quiet him down.
Would a reversed polarity damage a pedal, or electronic device? Or does it all depend on the device?

It depends on the device. Some thoughtfully-designed devices have a one-cent diode in series on the power input jack to guard against reverse polarity.
Many do not, and reverse polarity can make the magic smoke escape.
This is why all small electronics with removable plug packs have that little diagram on the bottom or near the power jack to show the user how the power jack is polarized--either center negative or center positive.

I recently incinerated a Behringer acoustic guitar pedal by using a wall wart of the wrong polarity. Fortunately I only had $9 into it. Unfortunately it wasn't half bad.

Anyone who had ever worked as little as part-time at RadioShack back in the day would be more qualified than any electrical engineer to know about power adapter polarity. ("Back in the day" meaning before they drove themselves out of business by focusing on wireless sales, but that's off-topic.)
