Mostly play Fender guitars and amps. I'm 71 and have had a guitar since 1964. Got serious in 1975.

Again, I must ask. What are the different levels of the Squier guitar. I think Affinity is the lowest level but I can't remember the levels above that.

Not sure but I can tell you the top of the line is the Classic Vibe and Artist series, then it was the Vintage Modified which I think they disco'd this year. Just go to the fender website.

There was a video on YouTube asking a Fender Custom Shop builder which Squier he would buy.

According to the 'Squier Talk' forum: from low to high: Bullet Affinity SE Standard Vintage Modified/Deluxe Classic Vibe
YMMV!

I have a classic vibe ‘62 Tele, which is now pretty much my #1 gigging guitar. I take it to *every* gig ahead of my AVRI 52 Tele and AVRI 62 Hot Rod Strat amongst others. It is Made in China and for me the quality is better than Mex fenders and at least as good as MIJ and AmSe.

Had a Classic Vibe P, Jazz, and 50's tele style P basses. They were my favorite in the order above. The P stood well above the others. Wasn't wild about the 50's tele. Nothing like the 51P Reissue I wished I hadn't sold. The 2018 Player Series P bass I now have it a keeper and enjoy it almost as much as my 2017 American Pro Jazz bass. May I never sell these two.

The Master builder was Ron Thorn so I would assume he knows what he speaks of

I took the guitars to the local Fender dealer and he looked them up for me. Both are Vintage Modified which he says came along a little before the Classic Vibe. Both guitars are like new.

I don't recall you saying you acquired two Squiers... I thought your OP was just a question of curiosity. Tell us more...

I have a "Vintage Modified" Surf Strat in Surf Green that is a very nice instrument. This was the model that came with the "lipstick" pickups, vintage style tuners, Fender stamped saddles. I had plans for it. I sold the complete, loaded pickguard, with the lipsticks when the guitar was basically brand new. I wired up my own new pickguard with Tex-Mex pickups and all Fender components (pots, switch, etc.). To be honest, I originally bought this guitar because it was the cheapest way to get a Surf Green Strat. I just love that color. Glad I bought it when I did. No longer available.

I have a Squier CXS, crafted in China, that is an excellent guitar. Equal to MIM for sure.

I sold an old tricked out Squier Affinity and bought a Firefly (335 clone) on Amazon. What a great bang-for-the-buck!

Both of my remaining basses are Squiers.
I have a late 1982 MIJ Squier P bass which is a wonderful instrument. It is like a '62 reissue with what I suspect is locally sourced electronics. Still sounds good though. And a Indonesian-made Vintage Modified P Tele bass with the single mudbucker. No need for me to trade up.

It's been my experience (VM Bass VI and fretless p) that the Vintage Modified series are great instruments that they let the new folks practice making nuts on. The nut on my VI was functional, but it was very soft and had shreds of nut material all around it. Looked like it was just flaking away. The fretless p nut was cut so poorly that it caused the open E to buzz (on a fretless!). I couldn't track down the problem, so I took it to a luthier who diagnosed and fixed it for free in just a few minutes.
Other than that, people pick my basses up, love them, and pull their jaws off their chests when I tell them how little they cost. Nice instruments, but the series is discontinued.

Hey McCreed, I picked up these guitars at 2 different pawn shops. I've had the Strat for several years and the Mustang only a month or so. Both are spotlessly clean. I put Vintage '64 pups in the Strat and it sounds and feels great. The Mustang feels a little chunky to me. I guess it is the shorter scale.

At least when GC has them on sale. The ones that come in the "starter packs" with amps, etc. are called "SE". People like these for modifying due to having full thickness bodies, unlike the Affinities.

If buying used you might stumble onto an excellent Squier Affinity made in the earlier years. Sometimes a "pearl" happens in any line. Case and Point, a few years ago I was in a GC store looking for a bass. I heard a man and his son checking out basses. Of the 3 he tried one really stood out. I believe an 83 model Affinity. I told him it sounded really good and he said it played well too. He didn't let it out of his hands. Had he of, I would have bought it.

My CV 50's Tele is above any MIM Tele's I ever played. Gigged it for several years. Did change out the PU's but don't think it made much difference. Still have it by my goto Tele is my 60th Anniversary.

Just bought a new Affinity Telecaster yesterday.
I had a credit at the shop so the balance wasn’t much. I’m surprised at how much guitar one gets for the price. This one is the two tone burst and there doesn’t appear to be a seam in the grain of the body. Do they veneer them? Of course I’ve already spent the day looking at bits and pieces like replacement saddles and maybe the pickups. I like everything from The Beatles to metal, and the thought of the tiny SD humbucker units crossed my mind. Thankfully being a bit cash strapped means I’ll be using it stock for a while.
It’s been a while since I bought a new guitar. The weekend will be spent playing it I think. I was wondering what folks here have swapped out.
