I build this pedal board quite a while ago. Right now I am using it in front of my Warmoth G5 bass guitar with EMG pups and BQS active EQ system and an Ampeg BA115 amp. DSC_2407 by Larry Madsen, on Flickr The pedal to the right is a Dunlap volume pedal. It's pretty much just there because it has no better place to sit at the moment, but the space is provided for a wah or such pedal to fit on the board. The only pedal I really have in use is the TU2 tuner. I'd be interested to hear what types of pedals would be common to complement a bass guitar rig? Compressor? Distortion? What you got that could be useful?

This are the only ones I'm using right now, powered by a Strymon "Ojai" power supply that lives under the board:

From what I know about compressors is can see where it could be a contributor.
The Hartke looks to be largely or partly an equalizer. I do have pretty extensive equalizer capability onboard with the BQS. What else does that one offer?

All my basses are passive. The Hartke just gives me some extra tone-tweaking capability. I prefer to keep the EQ on the pedal board to avoid having to mess with batteries (the need for which is eliminated by the Strymon).

Add a compressor and you're covered in my world. I might add a wha or envelope filter if I was playing a lot of Funk.

Should a compressor for bass (or any other pedal for that matter) be designed specifically for bass?
Or are the applications pretty universal for guitar and bass?

A compressor is a compressor is a compressor. Hoowever, there are compressors made for bass that have EQ controls tuned for bass frequencies, and that makes them a bit more effective. Here's a pretty good bass pedal...LTB's signature model:

Never really use them. I do have a floor tuner, and a rarely used sansamp Bass DI, just in case I have catastrophic amp failure and have to go through the PA. Picked up a used Zoom B3 years ago because it was dirt cheap, I’ve played around with it, even brought it to rehearsal once or twice, never used it at a gig. I forgot all about the zoom until this thread, It took a few minutes to find it, checked it to make sure the batteries had been removed.
I guess most of the stuff I play works fine with a good bass and great amp.

I used to have delay (MXR Carbon Copy) and mild distortion (Darkglass Microtubes) on my board but took them off because I wasn't really using them.
For me, as far as signal chains go, simpler is better.

I was thinking that the pedal board in original post would be sufficient for all bassists. I use a MXR80 Bass DI+ pedal as overdrive/distortion to help "fill up" the background space when the lead guitar player plays his solos. Haven't got a board for it tho'

I was thinking that the pedal board in original post would be sufficient for all bassists. You are probably correct there. Sometimes I find myself just dabbling around with things. One might argue, If I can't play the damn thing anyway I have no way to know that I don't need more stuff. Somehow as I type that I have these images of Queenie looking at me with a furrowed brow and a slightly tilted head saying, "Huh?"

I have a Boss BCB-6 pedalboard: Boss Tuner=>Boss DS-1 (orange guitar pedal)=>Boss Bass distortion=>Boss CEB-2 Chorus=>Boss Flanger=>Boss Bass EQ. I think the Flanger is from 1981, it's currently the oldest piece of kit that I bought new that I still use!! I set the chorus to a very slow speed and a low blend, I leave it on all the time, and I like the EQ cause it gives me a little more shaping than the amp (GK-210 combo) does. I just added the DS-1, trying to find a useable distortion for "Ace of Spades" and some Metallica stuff. Peter Steele from Type O Negative liked the DS-1, so I'm giving it a try.
