This was written by my singer buddy Dave after his wife passed from cancer. He brought the melody and lyrics and wanted me to arrange and record it. He didn't know what he wanted for accompaniment so I just went for it. I know he's a Genesis fan so I decided to go that direction with it. This guy was in his late 50's when we recorded this and his voice is still incredible well into his 60's. I have been very blessed to be able to work with him for most of my life. I've known him since I was 15. He's still one of my closest friends and one of the best lead vocalists I've ever heard. His wife was a huge Pink Floyd fan so I thought his references to them in the lyrics should be musically highlighted as well. Thus, the little things injected at the appropriate points in the lyrics. No drums in this one either. 3 acoustic guitars, occasional keyboards, bass, electric 12 string, electric guitar for the solo, vocal, lap steel, Hammond organ, and assorted hand percussion. I used Mellotron choir samples in the end to give that angelic feel. That was Dave's idea. He wanted a Comfortably Numb-kind-of solo so this is what I came up with. Not the same but as melodic as I could make it. I had a friend play one of the rhythm acoustic guitar tracks so it would sound a little different than me playing all of them. He also played the keyboard pad during the choruses. I arranged the song with some input from Dave and played everything else. The phone message at the end was the last one he ever recorded of her so we put it in there too. soundcloud.com/ninworks/hard-to-remember-when
