I use this amp so seldom I can't say it hasn't always been like this. As you move it up a bit it actually gets quieter, maybe even dirtier, before taking off. The only tinkering I have done with this amp is pop in a Heyboer TO20 tranny, replace the baffle with birch and put in a WGS Veteran. This is a little beast and the oddity can be lived with as long as it doesn't portend greater issues.
Ideas?

Hmmm, I actually noticed it after trying a couple different tubed in V1, V2. I do believe it was doing it with the other 2 but not as noticeably. Thanks for the response, I'll dig around in my tube bin and see what shakes out.

If not a valve issue, how old are its HT ecaps, especially if they’re the grey IC brand?

Another avenue of investigation is to ensure the volume pot has a solid connection to ground.

I read a thread on another board where someone had the exact same issue; volume at 1 (no 0 on this amp), a small range of louder and gritty, then normal volume. They solved it with a different V1. I've been preoccupied with my Texas ice storm leftovers so haven't had a chance to dig in.

I haven't opened it up yet but did do some swapping of tubes. Interesting that some combinations reduce the minimum volume back to almost nothing and get rid of "fuzzy zone" between 1 and 2, but multiple other combinations do the exact same thing. For now I've settled on a CV4024 in V1 and an ecc83 in v2.
I'll give it a look inside when I have a chance. I think this is possibly something that resulted from my transformer swap. Thanks gents.
