A modern western of sorts that's excellent is Longmire on Netflix. It's a series about a Wyoming sheriff dealing with local corruption, an Indian casino, and his own demons. Read the Craig Johnson's books on which the series is based. They're good ones.

While I love a good John Wayne Western (Liberty Valance, The Shootist and Rio Bravo are great films), my favorite Weaterns are the TV series Have Gun Will Travel and Deadwood. And of course Paladin played the bad guy in The Shootist, making that film doubly great for me. Richard Boone was also the bad guy in Hombre. I actually have Hombre on DVD but haven't watched it for a few years. Didn't realize Richard Boone was in it. You can probably guess what I'll be watching this weekend. Thanks for the info.

Many great suggestions posted. I second the wish that more westerns would be made. While I love most of the classics we've mentioned, I've burned out on many of them after multiple viewings. I mean, once you've seen them 3 or 4 times, you've pretty much noted all the cool cinematography, clever dialog and subtle plot twists, not to mention "already knowing how it ends".
I will qualify my desire for new westerns by saying that I'd prefer if they would produce fewer, really good ones instead of churning out mediocre ones or half-baked sequels or "re-makes" by the boatload. We tend to forget that during the heyday of western movies and TV shows, there was plenty of dreck released in addition to as the classic gems that have withstood the test of time (and I'm not referring to the "B" matinee serials, which are so corny and campy that I enjoy them still, even beyond the fact that I find them very nostalgic since I saw so many of them at the theater while I was very young).
And please, don't make westerns that look like video game /caricatures of the genre (a trend that seems to have infected many "action" films these days) or pepper the dialog with contemporary slang. And please, Hollywood, do your homework and don't get sloppy about keeping the wardrobe, weapons, etc. "period-correct". I find "incorrect" weapons to be especially distracting when they appear in these films: really bursts the bubble of illusion

I liked Longmire even if the lead actor is an Aussie. And his female deputy is creepy hot. Mostly creepy. But still hot.
I've really enjoyed Lou Diamond Phillips in pretty much everything he's done these past years since the Richie Valens movie.

Speaking of "westerns", I saw Sam Elliott in a western themed commercial for what turned out to be Doritos. I think they thought it was clever. It wasn't. But Elliott sure, I mean, sho' looks the part.

She's got some shoulders on her. Pretty sure she could kick my ass. Funny thing is, she's not a blond in the books.
I eventually got used to Lou Diamond Phillips in the role of "Henry" but, having read the books before I saw the show, had pictured him as being a taller, stockier guy.

Never read the books so I had no preconceptions.

Graham Greene makes a really good Native thug ("Malachi Strand") in "Longmire".
A Martinez also does a sinister portrayal of "Jacob Nighthorse".

Agreed on both! Most of the characters in this series make you believe.

The "Nighthorse" character reminds me of some of the eses I went to high school with.

Longmire was great, but I hated how Longmire's normal attitude suddenly changed towards the end.

I thought it showed a good progression as to how none of us are completely immune from our circumstances.

Love westerns! All the episodes of "Have Gun, Will Travel" really rock and are available on YouTube.

If you like Sci-Fi with a western feel check out Firefly. They also made a movie with the same characters after the series was canceled called Serenity. One of my favorite movies.

Rio Bravo, Tombstone, Gunfight at the OK Corral, and My Darling Clementine, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Liberty Valance are a few of my favorites.
Over the last few years (being retired), I watched quite a few episodes of Death Valley Days, Lawman, and Tales of Wells Fargo. And a bit of Have Gun, Will Travel. All worthwhile, in my opinion.

Then we should also include Outland, which is basically High Noon in outer space. Have we even mentioned High Noon yet?

I liked Jeff Daniels in "Godless". I thought Kurt Russell and cast were great in "Bone Tomahawk". Kind of a Western/Horror mashup. Gets pretty graphic though. Mot for those with a weak stomach.

One of my all time favorite westerns is one called “The Westerner.” It stars Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. It is the story of Judge Roy Bean and his infatuation with the world renowned actress Lily Langtree. There is underlying comedy in this one as Cooper’s character slowly and slyly outfoxes The Judge. It is from 1939 and Brennan won his first of three supporting actor Oscars. DEFINITELY worth the watch.

Has anyone mentioned Pale Rider yet. One of Clint's best in my opinion. The popular western motif of good versus evil wrapped in a story of redemption and revenge.

Just finishing up Wyatt Earp, Kevin Costner. MAN it is long. I really do like Tombstone better. Vastly superior dialogue, more of an ensemble cast.

While Tombstone was a good flick, I'm the opposite. I liked Wyatt Earp better. I thought it told the story better.

One of my favorites is Outland, with Sean Connery as a lawman sent to a remote mining outpost on another planet. It's not filmed in broad western landscapes like a John Ford picture, but it is 100% western...with a space twist. It is true to the western in many ways, including the "sheriff's" weapon: a short shotgun.

Watched Silverado last night......hadn't seen it in many years......great movie.
Yeah, that's a good one. No Country For Old Men -- it's a modern western, of sorts.
