We still go every now and then, mostly driven by a movie we really want to see. In general the theaters are nicer and cleaner than when I was a kid. Yeah, it's not cheap... but what is anymore? Tonight we're headed downtown for the first night of the Banff Film Festival! three nights of outdoor and adventure films, it's one of my favorite indoor events of the year. Can't see that at home.

We're (wife and adult kids) are going more than ever. The closest theater has heated reclining seats that you can reserve online. They're tiered enough that a tall guy in front of you is a non issue. I like the trailers... see what else is coming. Talking or texting... don't see that happening here. I can't remember the last time i saw either. We're really enjoy going. Definitely has not been an issue for me either. I have seen it happen, but not to a point where its disturbing. Especially with the recliner seats, other than the person right next to you (if there is one), everyone is so far apart its not an issue.

You can thank the late great Robert Kardashian for this. Yes, THAT Kardashian. Before joining the OJ dream team he contracted with theater chains for exclusive rights to their screens prior to showtimes for the purpose of running advertising. He then sold advertising to local and regional businesses. I don't mind previews so I can make note of crap I won't be seeing.

If you're seeing actual ads, not just coming attractions for other movies, then you've arrived too early. especially in this day and age where seats are reserved in advance.

We’ll see one or two a year. There needs to be a strong enough pull to see it in a theater. You know, like Downton Abbey. You saw that in a movie theater?? It was a TV show. We rented the movie and watched it at home where we could pause and discuss as needed. We spent $6 to watch it in the comfort of our home.

Granny’s face on the big screen is the stuff dreams are made of. 😂

I think the last time I was in a movie theatre was when "That Thing You Do" came out. My wife and kids still go.

I allow my wife to drag me to a theater about once a year. However, the last trip to one was my choice to go see "Ford vs. Ferrari" at an IMAX that is located in a largely retirement/snowbird community. Oh yeah, I will only go on a school weekday at the earliest showing possible.

I dig it. We have a $5 matinee on Tuesdays, and there's maybe a dozen people there.
Just saw Ford v. Ferrari the other day.

"And as to the coconut corn, don't forget the excessive quantities of salt the dump on it!"
But, sa;t doesn't coagulate and clog up the septic line.
Back in Winnemucca in the 50s.. Sage Theare..
All day Saturday, noon to 5..
25Cents.
2 Full length movies. Newsreels. Travel Log, no end of cartoons and serials, Western and Flash Gordon etc.
Popcorn a dime, Black Crows a nickel.
Total cost 40 Cents. that's 8 cents an hour.. and no commercials.
And while standing in line outside the theater next to the bar.. the occasional fight that ended up on the sidewalk or in the middle of the street. Saw a guy stagger out of the bar with a knife in his chest and drop dead in front of 50 kids. .. fact.. that's what made Winnemucca great. more on that another time.

I'll go ONLY if its a big screen spectacle, where I can't duplicate the experience at home. And only 4 weeks after debut, preferable just before dinner time. Last three movies I saw, I shared the room with average 6 people. But YEAH I REALLY ENJOY paying money to see commercials.. I do have a sick addiction to the movie popcorn. Always pop a few lipitor pills before i go...

I think the last movie I saw in a theatre was Easy Rider in 1969 at the Andersen AFB Base Theatre on Guam.

Well I saw Star Wars.
It was kind of sappy, but did wrap things up rather well.
Heated recliner, clean theater, hot fresh popcorn..... And surprisingly a good number of geezers like me there.

I agree with your assessment. I’d seen the first three, and I tried to watch some of the others. The franchise lost me for a while. I thought this was a fitting finale. And I know enough of the whole series that I wasn’t lost. 😊

The last movie that I can recall seeing in a theater was “The Passion of the Christ”. I think there was one after that but can’t remember that for sure.
There really isn’t any reason to spend the money to sit in a theater. We have a big screen TV in the family room that is connected to my stereo system so I can really shake the room with sound if it is so desired giving you the total theater experience, and, we have extremely comfortable seating and a bathroom within a few steps along with the best stocked bar in town. Who needs to go to a theater?

Who needs to go to a theater? I don't really think its about "need". Plenty of people enjoy going, so they go. Some people would rather stay in their house, and that's fine too. Personally I like to see first run movies when they come out, I enjoy the whole experience of it, i enjoy them on the big screen (your TV ain't THAT big) and I enjoy the escape, phones are away, nobody bothering me, etc. for a couple hours. Plus like I said, its something other than going out to eat that I can do with my family (indoor girls, as I have described them) regardless of the weather. I have been in movie theaters that were filled to capacity recently, and also have gone to the 10AM Sunday showings that my daughter and I now refer to as "private screenings". I don't mind them either way.

Prices "back in the day" don't mean much today, inflation don't you know. When I was a kid a diner near the theaters had a great burger and a lunch bag size order of fries for 50 cents.
A former coworker was a big movie theater fan. When he ordered popcorn he would ask for extra "yellow grease".

It's an old joke. Theater concessions kid asks "do you want butter on that", you reply "no, give me the same yellow crap you put on everyone else's".

I take myself to a matinee the day before Thanksgiving every year. I know what I'm in for, and what it's going to cost.
I enjoy it.

My wife and I enjoy going to the theatre to watch a new movie that’s just out. Going back to last summer, we have seen Midway, Ford Verses Ferrari, Knives Out, The Joker, the Mr. Rogers movie, and 1917. Except for the Joker, which in my opinion was awful, the level of entertainment was very reasonable. We don’t just go to go, as the movies we choose to see must have garnered some kind of interest for us. Yes, we buy snacks. The reclining seats are awesome when we get them. All in all it’s usually a nice date out of our apartment for us. We have a friend who studied film at UCLA and he takes movies seriously, and sometimes he accompanies us.

My wife and I enjoy going to a matinee once or twice a month during the week as they are usually half the price. Yes, the previews and coming attractions are getting a bit overdone, so that's the time to vist the bathroom and then the highly over-priced concession stand. I read an article recently saying that the extreme prices of the concessions is the only way the theater owners make any money. Supposedly the profit margin is very small on showing the movies themselves. I don't know how true that is, but nevertheless it's a nice diversion from reality once or twice a month, and really, so what if the concession prices are high? It's not like we're talking hundreds of dollars here. The recliners with food/drink trays are a nice touch, and another advantage of the matinees is that there are only a few people there and there are no problems with big-headed people being in your way!

Went to see Parasite last week, afternoon show for the grey haired ones. Here they almost always insert a 10 min pause into the film at some random point about an hour in. You are then supposed to go and purchase beer/wine/snacks before the film resumes. I never move from my seat, taking on-board more liquids will only require unscheduled bathroom breaks.
The film was good with let's say, an unexpected ending.

Yes, when I first came here (The Netherlands) waaaay back in '83 it was a WTF moment when the film stopped and the lights came on, but I guess I'm used to it now.

We go around every couple months or so. Sometimes I go just to have the popcorn (without the butter oil). As far as ads, I’ve navigated 2or 3 while reading this thread.
