I've heard it said that if you wait until you're thirsty to rehydrate, it's too late. Drink 8 glasses of water a day, " they" say, even if you don't want to.
This, of course, has been debunked. Along with the myth that chewing gum stays in your stomach seven years, you have to wait an hour after eating before you go in the water, sugar makes kids hyperactive, we only use ten percent of our brains and cold weather makes you sick.
Maybe it's all part of that "it must be a full moon" trope we always hear, that accompanies reports of crazy human behavior. These ideas get repeated so much, that they become accepted, in part because supposedly corroborating anecdotal "evidence," gets heaped on the fire in place of logic.
Back to the water: despite everything you may have heard, rehydrating with coffee or beer is just as effective as doing so with water, even though coffee and beer are perceived as mildly diuretic.
Just thought I'd throw this out there while I tinker with my 250 mile per gallon carburetor, that the auto makers have always suppressed.

"and cold weather makes you sick"
This one I believe. Or rather, cold weather impairs your body's ability to combat illness. Personal experience anyway.
As hard as I may have tried, I dont think I've ever been able to consciously drink 8 glasses of water in a day. Probably have during some sweat-a-thons, but never when I've made an effort. Those attempts usually turn into a p!ssfest.

An apple a day does *not* keep the doctor away.
That was marketing BS started by the Washington State Apple Commission. We know there's no seed of truth here because they offer group medical coverage for their employees.
Lying bastages!
This public service announcement has been brought to you by an industry in-cider.

Thanks -- I'm going to start testing this right away. Beer first.

"...sugar makes kids hyperactive."
There is some truth to this one. When blood glucose levels rise and fall rapidly from refined sugars and empty carbs, there is an adrenaline surge that can include the shakes, behavioral changes, memory issues, and attention-span depletion. Children are more susceptible than adults to this spike in blood sugar levels and adrenaline surge because of their size and higher metabolism.

8 glasses is only 64 ounces.
I usually drink at least 3 16 ounce cups of lemon water within 30 minutes of awakening in the morning, then more throughout the day.
Hiking with a 100 ounce camel back and it'll be gone 3/4 the way through.
I looked up some evidence on beer (drinking an IPA at the moment) and the research I found proposing beer for hydration had the caveat of 2.3% ABV beer, which no one drinks. Most evidence of >4% ABV beer, ie, beer, results in dehydration.

I have always thought that coffee and beer have such a high percentage of water that any diuretic qualities are well and truly compensated for.

An apple a day will keep anyone away. If you throw it hard enough.

Does vodka count?

When I was trying to pass kidney stones, my doctor told me to drink extra fluids to help them pass. I asked, "Will any fluids do?" He said yes, so I told him I'd make sure to drink plenty of beer this weekend. He said, "Not recommended but it would do?
