" I then tried a 25W Weber 12F150 and gotta say, I hated it. All my headroom disappeared and what gain in gained was nothing but a farting mess. I still wonder if there was something wrong with that particular speaker since they are so highly touted.'
yeah, all the ones I've heard had tons of headroom, especially the 50 watt version

" I then tried a 25W Weber 12F150 and gotta say, I hated it. All my headroom disappeared and what gain in gained was nothing but a farting mess. I still wonder if there was something wrong with that particular speaker since they are so highly touted.' yeah, all the ones I've heard had tons of headroom, especially the 50 watt version I'm not sold on Weber being any better than the Sica Jensens, WGS or Jupiters. I put them in the same category. They all make a decent speaker. But... I'll not lie... outside the vintage Chicago Jensen... I prefer the Sica Jensen Ri's. Imo they do that Vintage voice and feel the best out of the modern variants... Doesn't mean they sound the best... Example: the modern Weber's 12f150 with a 40oz driver, tight tolerances will have a lot more frequency range and efficiency than the vintage spec driver of the Jensen C12N Reissue at 30oz and loose tolerances. Sometimes.... that modern driver works against it.... as in your case with what ever amp you had put in it. I'm a vintage tone junkie, so I like a speaker that sounds vintage, that's part of the attraction. People who say the reissues don't sound like originals ... How do you compare a 60yr old speaker w/ 60 yrs of cone fatigue to a new speaker? Ya can't. The RI C12Ns I put into the 74 Pro Reverb are from early 2000s.. And mellowing with age (as all speakers do that grow old) Because of what I'm hearing, it's getting a silky soft quality like I remember Chicago Jensen had/have. Not quite there... but in 20yrs? Who knows with these Reissues ... From the last statement.. I'm growing convinced that the magic or the original Jensens might be in that stiff, thin membrane design and what Father Time does to it.. Oxidization, fatigue, heat.. creates a cone that is soften and fatigued in all the right places, along with a driver that doesn't over power the cone in it's advanced state... the result... magic. Then there is the approach to how you dial in an American voiced speaker...that can and does attribute to somebodies opinion of a speaker. which is for a different thread, different day.

Interesting. Never found one. One that I have used and would probably do again is the reissue Jensen C12N with the modified dust cap. I got the idea from someone on the old Moe's - gently cut out the paper dust cap and glue in a piece of felt. It takes away that weird upper midrange spike and gets a very pleasant, even sound. Of the replacement speakers I've used over the years, that has probably been the best. Finally got around to this... There is something to the Steve Dahlman (sp) modification... here now to be known as the Dahlman mod.
I Put a felt dust cap on a Reissue C12N and put it in a Blues Jr. The felt cap dropped the resonate frequency by a good measure, those of you that like the Reissue detail and dynamics but thought that the top end was too bright would be pleased by the mod. Not at all woolly, the top end still has detail but there is no bite, and the base went from soft/loose more to soft/punchy. Over all the speaker had composure and held together decent under moderate overdrive. I'm going to leave it in... give some paces and see how it holds together in the next few months (might even gig with it)

Steve Dallman pokes his head in here occasionally.

Steve Dallman pokes his head in here occasionally. That would be cool ... I like to ask him what exact felt dust cover he used... I just picked a generic 1.5 and slapped it on, made sure when the glue dried the former had free play and slapped it in. defiantly sounds old school.. pretty balanced
