Space and wiring - basically it was "input on front, out/power/access on rear" - there's no room for a switch on the bigger BF/SF panels without taking the consistent "look" of the model name away.

Hum/noise. They kept the switches as close to the P.S. XFMR and rectifier as possible.
Ever notice the metal insulated tube (grounded on one end) used to house the power switch wires on tube stereos from that era? They kept them close to the chassis wall away from signal tubes.
