So I want to test some suspect capacitors with my multimeter. Can I test them with multimeter without unclipping from the circuit?

It depends on the circuit around them. What are you hoping to find out? A multimeter’s only good for identifying shorts and value drift, won’t test for the most common cap failure modes of excessive leakage / ESR.

Yup guys. A little research and I figured it out. Need a good ESR meter. I"ll probably hold off for now. I know enough to turn this kind of issue over to a tech.

I built a kit ESR Meter several years ago. It was meant for capacitors but I found it also useful in testing Micro switch contacts (measured say 10 times while pressing and releasing the switch) to check for intermitant contacts. Still have it.
