I have developed a desire for a good quality, portable digital piano. It will remain in my music room, but I do not want a piece of furniture, so to speak. I know many have effects and so forth, but my requirements center around very realistic piano voicing(s), action that is very close to a good acoustic piano, and one with a solid history of reliability. The Yamaha P series certainly seems to have a good reputation, and these are available in a wide range of price points. I know nothing about other manufacturers, Korg, et.al. I don't mind using an independent amp such as a Fishman if speakers are not built in. What say those that have experience to someone like me who would rather spend a bit more than regret a decision later? My average guitar is in the price range of a Fender Am Strat or better, as an example. I am considering new as well as preowned. I also have a MIM Fender Strat and a PRS SE, so I am not a price snob either. This is to say in today's world there are some really good values at different price points, but I am far from up to date on keyboards. Again, the one feature I do not want to compromise is the action. Thanks.

There are so many great ones these days. i recommend calling Sweetwater and chatting with one of their sales engineers. They can set you up with what you need, in your price range, and nail it.

Thanks, ninworks. I spoke with them yesterday. They are very professional and have me looking at two models.

I purchased this Yamaha. DSC_2302 by Larry Madsen, on Flickr It's not completely "portable" ... but it's not a "piece of furniture" either. This specific model (DGX 650) might not be in production now, but it does provide great piano sound w/weighted keys. Yamaha seems to be very good with these.

I was in the market a year or so ago and went with the Korg Air G1. It's not what you're looking for since it was very much a furniture-type model. But I'm sure Korg has a suitable option for you. My sticking points were sound quality and the response of the keyboard. I setup the G1 right next to my console upright and honestly you couldn't tell the difference in sound quality if you were in the next room. The volume levels were even the same. From my research, it seemed that at any given price point, all the major brands had equal sound quality and the biggest point for brand comparison was the feel and response of the keyboard if you wanted weighted keys.

You really can't go wrong with any of the top manufacturers. Yamaha, Korg, Kawai, Roland, etc. all make great units.

Keep an eye on a local used market.
It is pretty common for mom & dad to buy their kid a really nice digital piano and offload it once it is obvious the kid has no desire to practice. Not only can you get a good deal, but they're often very gently used.

You’ll want to make sure the keys have an acoustic piano feel. As far as brands, Yamaha is tops in my book, with Roland a close second.

I'd like to add a Nord stage piano to the list. From Italian Nord elettronica. Just had one dragged in by the keys-man and loved it. That coming from a guitar player..

Nord is at the top as far as what it can do and how it sounds Quite expensive though.

I have a Casio AP-270 digital piano and it's great. Don't let the old jokes put you off. The weighed keys feel right, three working pedals, the sounds are good, and it has a very useable selection of other noises to make too. Similar size but heavier than Larry's Yamaha above but more traditional piano styling. Comes in white and black. It has both the wife's and mother-in-law's seal of approval (and MiL was a piano teacher so you can take it to the bank that it don't suck). Two headphone outs and midi via USB for direct recording right into your DAW if you like. www.casio.com/intl/electronic-musical-instruments/product.AP-270WE/

Every piece of keyboard gear that I own that isn't Hammond is Yamaha except for one amplifier.
