I don’t have trash pickup at the farm, it’s easier to stop by one of the many Suwannee Trash dumps on my way to town.
Around a month or so ago while the Florida Folk Festival was goin on, I stopped at the dump. The dumpmaster was sitting outside his little cabin playing a Dreadnought, he came out and asked if I had a guitar with me, yeah, I pulled out a chair I keep in the pickup and we played for a while. It was a busy Saturday day. He said come by on Wed. mornings, it’s the slowest time for him.
Yesterday I did, he plays well using chords I’m not familiar with, another guy pulled up to dump and the Dumpmaster asked him if he brought his drums, I had previously auditioned for this guys band, I mentioned this a while back, they told me they were going to use their backup bassist. I asked the drummer if they thought I sucked, he laughed, said hell no, I played their sets that night with basically nothing but the key the tune started with. Which was fine. He told me he’s not with them any longer, I locked in with him at that audition. He had a guitar with him. So we jammed at the dump for about an hour or so.
The Drummer had a new guitar that needed setup and the Dumpmaster had two guitars for his kids that needed set up, he also asked me if I had any I could sell him, I do. I was showing them pictures of a few acoustic instruments I made they asked about set ups. I told them sure, it would be helpful if they let me play a guitar they liked so I can nail the set up. Around here there is a wide range of set up preferences. Some of the bluegrass and folk players need higher action. With this in mind I plan on bringing a few guitars next Wed as reference for what they want in a set up.
We plan to meet again at the dump next Wednesday around 9:00am. Now that’s the way to put a group together..

That is way too cool! And here I am, letting the fact that I don't have a practice room stand in the way of starting a band.....

I don’t know if these guys want to put a project together. I’ll continue with the “Dumpsters” and see how it pans out. The drummer has a studio and is less than a 1/4 mile from the Dump. Maybe 4 or 5 miles from home.

Hmmm... from "garage" jam to "garbage" jam...
...is that a step up or a step down?

Well, all the garbage aspect does encourage improvisation and recycling, plus there is a kind of captive audience thing goin on. A drive in dump jam may just be unique to the greatness of the United States of America. I’m already working the concept of the first album cover. Audience expectations will be so low we’ll sound great to everybody.

I was dumpster jamming a few weeks ago and a guy pulls up to me in his pickup, he says hey hush what’s going on here. Skin, is a long lost friend hadn’t heard a word about him in three or four years. He’s a brother and my go to Harley Davidson wrench.
We’re doing Monday’s now, much less trash traffic. I was dumpster jamming yesterday, it was just the two of us but I brought the ABG and the Phil Jones Double Four with me. It’s way too busy on Saturdays.
A few weeks back I was working on guitars. The Dumpster Master had me working on another small guitar for his niece. I lowered the strings and adjusted for better intonation. We had three other musicians jamming with us while I was working on the guitar. A little old gray haired lady called me over to her car and told me she had two guitars that needed some work, I gave her a card. Her husband swung by the farm a few days later with a guitar, I adjusted the action and tweaked the nut for a bit tighter intonation, while BS’ing in the workshop.I’ve been taking the luthier tool bag with me the last month or so. This part of Florida is very musical, one of those hot spots for music you find here and there across the country. The Suwannee River is not far away. John Anderson lives in this county, Haven’t run into him yet but it’s just a matter of time, he’s a friend of a friend. Arlo’s not too far away, a bit closer to the coast.
We’re moving the Dumpster Jam to Mondays, much less traffic.

It was overcast yesterday, with a threat of rain and a bit on the cool side. I pulled out a mic stand from a trash bin, one of the old ones, with a heavy base, the pole adjust/lock works fine.
A new guy showed up on a Monday garbage deposit. Originally from NYC, he initially came across as full of BS. He mentioned he made his first million by the age of 25. I mentioned that I had attended PS104, he said “You Lived in Brooklyn” !?! he was from Brooklyn, I asked him if he knew were the original Ft.Hamilton was. He did and the apartment building we lived in. I mentioned dad was in the Air Force, he said “so he was stationed at Hamilton AFB. The fort is long gone so is the apartment building, it was demolished for the new bridge they built some years after we moved from Brooklyn.
He lives a half a mile or so from the dump, mentioned his 200 acres. He hung around with us for a couple of hours. He played my guitar a bit, he ain’t bad. He mentioned this $11,000.00 classical guitar that had a bad head stock break, Dumpmaster told him I could fix it. He took my number and knew were my house was.
If he shows with this instrument it could be likely he’s real. He’s been playing as long as I have, born the same year, in every other way he seems authentic. Other than his stories of recordings, wealth and gig experience in, every way I read this guy as authentic , with passion for music. He named no groups or dates, places or players. He mentioned his son was following his same path.
You never know who you’ll run into in this part of Florida. John Anderson lives down the road, I haven’t run into him yet, Arlo is a bit south on the East Coast. The Suwannee River in this county seems to create an ora of music attracting many musicians. It drew me in, my musical career started while we lived in Mayport near Jacksonville FL. Back in 1962-63. It got my brother too he still plays, mom tried but just couldn’t get it. Dad was a percussionist but he developed his skill in Monongahela, on the river of the same name.

That is way cool Mike! You are ready to roll whereever you go. I really like your method of setting a instrument to a favorite player a person has.

Monday’s get together was just the two of us playing, the dumpster Master and me. We had a couple people come by and hang out for a few tunes. I played a few, that came out of nowhere, the sound track “Suicide is Painless‘ and the Grateful Dead tune’ “Friend of the Devil” tunes I haven’t played in years. It’s funny how songs dropped off the list years ago, can just pop up mow and then. Even got a compliment singing Friend of the Devil, That’s never happened before. Normally someone will pull my plug if I try to sing at a venue. Maybe it’s a benefit of age. I even played “Alice’s Restaurant”. My sisters home isn’t too far from Arlo’s place.
One guy noticed how great my Cordoba C9 Parlor sounds. A year in my possession and it still amazes me every time I pick it up.

We had a few jams since the last posting. No new players today, just me and the Dumpmaster. I did drag the Phil Jones Double four and the power supply with me today. It really worked out fine. That’s a great little amp. A woman asked us about two banjos she had at home, they were closer to a ukulele and fretless. She went home to get them. They were home made. They didn’t have a lot of volume, a seriously good characteristic for the instrument. One was virtually ready to play the other needed a nut, tuning machine and a bridge, the skins were fine. . The Dumpmaster told her I could fix them. She’s going to think about it.

I made it to the dump this Wednesday. The dump master had another guitar given to him. It was actually set up pretty well, but the nut is not centered, the strings are in perfect alignment. It was set up more like an electric guitar than an acoustic. He wants me to bring a file to deal with the over, nut edge. This is probably the 5th maybe sixth acoustic guitar he’s been been given. We give them away to those that want to learn and play, most going to youngsters who want to play.
I take my Doctors bag, Home-depot tool bag, of luthier tools.
We’ve agreed to get together this Wed, a few other musicians will attend. Saturday is the Wellborn Blueberry Festival, I usually take a Classical guitar. It’s a rural event with many opportunities to play a bit.
