I went to bed early last night and woke up at 2:00 AM. I decided I was going to record 12 string acoustic. Made a pot of coffee and went at it. This was the first chance I'd had to try out one of my new mic preamps, the Great River MP-500NV. I plugged it into the Warm Audio 1176 compressor clone and set up the U87 to mic the 12 string. I wrote a couple quick parts and practiced them for a few minutes to get them where the precision mistakes were minimal. While I was doing that I got the compressor set like I wanted and then recorded it. I cut and pasted the parts together to get some semblence of a structure. That input chain sounded very good. When I record this song for keeps I'm going to try a different mic and preamp just to see what happens. Even though it sounded very good, the U87 had more bottom end than what I think the guitar will need when mixed in with other instruments. A KM184 should thin it out a bit and tame some of the bottom end of the guitar. A different mic preamp could also help with that.
I have so much fun with this stuff. I have so many pieces of new gear I am unfamiliar with it's like Christmas every time I get to use one of them.

I love the sound of a 12-string, but I’ve never owned one. Sounds like you’re really into recording, which I know nothing about. I hope you post some results at some point, I’d love to hear it.
