Ernie Ball Primo Slinky.
9.5 - 12 - 16 - 24 - 34 - 44
Dang, just a few years ago I was playing 11's. 10's have felt good for a while now, but these feel perfect.

I play 009 to 046 on all my short scale guitars and 008 to 038 on the Strat. It took me awhile to acclimate to the 008's on the Strat but 009s were too hard on me when I was bending a lot of notes. The lighter gauge and the wider neck make me play the Strat a lot more than I used to.

I don't even remember what gauge I started out with, probably 8's. 11's worked best for me when I was gigging. For now I have a stockpile of 10's and have restrung 4 of my guitars with the 9.5's with 3 extra sets. They're a little pricier but found a 5 pack deal on Ebay.

I might give it a shot at some point. I need to get back into playing, and lightening my touch is something I need to work on. Maybe just a set of 9s.

10-38 (10, 13, 15, 26, 32, 38) for me the Hendrix, Duane Allman and Rory Gallagher guage Really hard to believe Duane used that gauge for slide. I'm sure action and a light touch, but I'd still manage to make it sound like someone dragging a bumper through a chop shop.

I played 13s for a while - ever have the hell of setting up a Kahler to take 13s? Don't!
I stick with 10s these days across the board for six string guitar stuff. I don't notice enough difference changing minor gauge on my short-scales and just associate how they play with them using the 10s I've used for a couple decades.
Where I'm picky is the Bass VI. There I do custom sets from Labella.
Heavier everything but not quite what you'd expect. I'd have to look up the numbers again (they're on a sticker in the case for it since I thought that'd be an easy way to not fudge it up or have to look in my order hirstory), but it's heavy e and A, light everything else.

They also break the string retainers a LOT faster.
It's already a weakness in the design, but...it made it much more prevalent.
I loved the things, they're my favorite trem (Jazzmaster/Jag is a close second) but I got tired of dealing with the crap maintenance and breakage.

I like 10-46 but I swap out the .017" 3rd string for a .016".

I think a lot of people who scoff at the heavy gauge string users often do so because they rush to judgement about their reasoning (SRV wannabes, etc.). I used 11's when gigging because they pushed back enough on my adrenaline. I essentially stopped breaking strings on stage, having intonation issues, etc.
I also believe that heavier strings make a better rounded sound. But that is more relevant to acoustic guitars. Electric guitars can be easily tweaked a hair, as demonstrated by Billy Gibbons and countless others. I've only been a casual fan of SRV but did a deep dive on YT recently. Holy smokes, there wasn't a sound that came out of that guitar that he didn't intend. I think the heavier strings did factor in to his sound, but only because of the synergy of tuning, action and approach.

I like the chord definition that the smaller gauges offer.
To be kind to my fingers I’ve migrated to .009s for Gibson scale and .008s for Fender scale. I like the way my guitars play and sound.
After all… it’s all about me.

I doubt I will ever fully get why he does that. There's no point - once I wised up after a couple years and went back down to 10s. the full usable range of the bridge was restored. With 13s, it's under massive tension, snaps string retainers more regularly than usual (they always break, but 13s...a lot more - and it's not a "do in between breaks" fix, it's "better have a backup instrument" and parts at home), and flying so tight that it snaps strings more. And it's decked to a point where dives down are a LOT more difficult and the range substantially restricted.

His action is also fairly high as well. It is down some, but not what I would call ideal. I also play the bass, so it doesn't make too much difference to me. I think if I were a guitarist, I would be using lighter strings. I am not so sold that string gauge makes too much difference with electrics.

Yea, high action is also expected at that point, can't go very low.
I play bass (mostly Bass VI these days) as well.
I don't need to be he-man super string guy - I honestly sound better with the lighter ones but I break anything less than 10s easily.

If your using a strat i found the sure fire fix for string breakage. I put wire insulation tubes thru the saddles where the strings come thru like Rene Martinez did on SRV's guitars and i went from breaking constantly to never breaking

I rarely, rarely play a strat any more.
If I want a trem, I want a Jaguar/JM trem.
If I want basic single coil, I want Mustang or Jaguar.
99% of the time it's one of my perfect for me Les Pauls with oddball specs.

I played 11s for many years when I was gigging. These days I mix it up to keep things interesting: 11s on some guitars, 10s on others, and 9.5s on others. Generally, Gibson scales get the heavier strings. I have a homebrew Strat that I set up as a 25.5" baritone I tune C to C; it has 013"-060" on it.

For anyone that’s UK based, Stringsdirect are a really good company, I’ve used them for maybe 20 years. There’s loads of good info in their blog, prices are keen, and as they sell single strings too, they allow the customer to assemble their own custom sets.

^^^JustStrings and StringJoy are the same way. They offer good options not available from The Big String Names, and they're not overpriced.

When I stepped down to 10's from 11's I did keep the 11's on my Les Paul and Epi 335 Pro for a while. I don't feel the need yet to restring them with a lighter gauge. I do have a Squier Strat setup with the 6 heaviest strings of a 7 string set of Power Slinkys, tuned B to B.
