I have been considering changing out the Celestion Greenback for and Alnico Blue in my Vox AC15H1TV. The Greenback sounds good but I'm looking for more of that traditional Vox chime everyone talks about. The Greenback does okay but I think I want more out of that amp. I love the amp. It seems to check all of the boxes for me but I think there's more in it if I were to change speakers. That thing soundsa like a big amp in every way but in a small package. Obviously it's not as loud but who cares?! I have a Twin Reverb if I need to get stupid loud.....which I don't.
Anyone have any experience with having used both speakers in a Vox amp and have a recommendation or comment?

I can’t make the A/B comparison with that amp, but I have a Blue in my Winfield Cyclone. That speaker really sounds like it’s made for the amp.

I have heard that the vintage Vox amps came with Blue's in them.

The Blue is going to have a sweet upper mids and jangle that the GB just quite won’t get.

I'm betting you'll love it. I've had a Blue in my Princeton Reverb II for years and its been great. I only recently swapped it out with an Eminence GB128 so that I could put it in a 1x12 cab. The EMI works great in the PRII (thanks leftee!) and I can always run the Blue from 3 different amps now (VHT Special 6, Pro Jr, PRII).
I've not ever owned a Vox aside from a Nighttrain, but I think Vox + Celestion Blue would be a match made in heaven.

I found a used one like I need that's in great shape for $200. That's the cheapest one i've seen. Going to go get it this morning. Anyone need a 25 watt 16 ohm Greenback?

I suspect you’re going to dig it!
I’m a bit weird about G12M-25s. I like them in closed-back cabs - the epitome being a 4x12. I never cared much for one in an open-back combo. I always found them too bright for my ears.

That’s weird, doesn’t match my experience. It’s almost as if the G12H30 anniversary speaker, rather than a G12M25 Greenback, was being described. I expect you’ll find the Blue has more treble than the Greenback, but without being piercing. The amp will seem more alive and responsive. However, in a combo, the increased sensitivity will be harder on the valves, microphonics and rattle may be a problem. If so, a separate speaker cab is the best option. I’m happy with Greenbacks in open back 2x12, closed 2x12 or closed back 4x12. One on its own can seem a bit thin, whatever the cab. I’ve never thought of them as bright speakers, the G12H30 does that.

I agree. The G12H is brighter. I think it’s because his opinions are based on this one amp.

The Blue will be noticeably louder (100dB as opposed to 96.5-97dB from the greenback).

I have a AC-15C1 with the greenback, would love to put a blue in it, but I hesitate to put a $320 speaker into a $500 amp 🤣
On the other hand, if it sounds great why not?

I have a AC-15C1 with the greenback, would love to put a blue in it, but I hesitate to put a $320 speaker into a $500 amp 🤣 On the other hand, if it sounds great why not? The 50th Anniversary Handwired AC15H1TV is a bit costlier than $500 but I get it. That's why I have been looking for a good deal for the last couple years. I found a used one that is in excellent condition for $200 but I had to drive for an hour to get there and and hour to get back. Still, if I'm going to use an amp it needs to sound how I like it no matter what. Otherwise I'll just use a modeler. I'm all about refining my setup. I put JBL K120's in my Twin Reverb when I got it because I remembered hearing one like that in my teens and was impressed. For loud and clean there is nothing like it but it didn't take pedals very well. Overdrives always sounded too fizzy no matter how I set the controls. I found a pair of vintage Jensen C12N speakers out of an old Wurlitzer organ and installed them. WHAT a difference that made in the sound. The amp wasn't as loud so I could turn it up more to make the amp work a little harder and pedals sound great through it. I sold the JBL's for more than what I paid for the Jensens so it was a win-win all the way. It also made the amp about 5 pounds lighter.

The Blue sounds sweeter to me. I’ve sold all my Vox amps and now play a Winfield Cyclone head but I’ve owned a ‘62 AC10, ‘63 AC30, and modern AC15HWTV. I tried Greenbacks in all of them (external cab on the AC10) and to my ear they have less chime and are perhaps more raw sounding. I’ve always loved the Blue, even in a DRRI, so consider my opinion to be colored blue.
