There was recently a thread bemoaning a perceived drop of in the level of posting here on MT2. I've been trying to come up with ideas we might try in an attempt to reverse this trend.
With the recent, increasing number of deaths among our aging, musical heroes, the number of "RIP" threads in the "Moe's Tavern" section is getting noticeable. Since many of us are "getting up there", this can get kind of depressing at times, especially when added to the occasional, RIP thread for one of our own members. I've talked about this accelerating loss of our contemporaries before and referred to it as "the disappearance of our cultural context".
I got to thinking...maybe we should have a separate "in memoriam" section for these "RIP" threads instead of posting them in "Moe's Tavern" section. That way, when in the mood, a person could go to that section periodically, specifically to keep up with who has passed on without being confronted by it every time they check into the "catch-all", Moe's Tavern section.
Another possible option would be to leave the RIP notices for members of MT2 (and members of the old FDP who never migrated here) in the Moe's Tavern section and have a separate "In Memoriam" section for other, well-known musicians/entertainers, etc.
I suppose one can argue that being confronted by mortality on a daily basis is healthy in that it discourages a person from "wasting the time they have left" but I, for one, don't need to be constantly reminded. Having all these "RIPs" interspersed with the normally-light-hearted offerings in Moe's Tavern is kind of like having obituaries sprinkled amongst the cartoons on the funny paper page: kind of a downer.
Anyhow...just a thought.
