Maybe fifteen or so years ago I started to favour short scale basses. It started with a Dano Longhorn and now I’m up to about a dozen. I recently saw a photo of an Ibanez Talman that had been modified , and it looked interesting. I liked the overall shape , it reminded me of the Paul Barth/Roger Rossmeisl design of the late 50’s. This one had a Gibson Tbird style pickup replacing the regular Jbass style pickup by the bridge. I like those pickups. So I started looking around , and found all kinds of conflicting reports on the Talman. It’s cheap. And yet many loved it. Enough to make me curious. I often use cheaper basses , but I do run them through nice amps. … sure enough , one popped up on kijiji for a good price , and I’m mid negotiation , and hoping it will come my way. It’s about an hour’s drive away in Lunenburg. I have an older grey bobbin Pbass pickup , and have sourced a Gibson style Tbird pickup. I’ll replace the tone pot , and probably put on lighter tuners if I don’t like the degree of neck dive. We’ll see … I‘ve never been one to modify basses so this should be a new adventure. I’m looking forward to this.

Very nice.
I’ve spent my entire life taking things apart and putting them back together more to my liking. 👍🏻

I really didn’t need to look at these on Sweetwater. The mint green short scale 5 string is really tempting as a beater bass. I’ve been playing mostly fanned frets lately due to hand pain, but having a short scale around the house is very appealing.

Oh, crap - I just discovered Ibanez is doing a short scale version of my 5 string fanned fret headless. Tempting.

The seller has been quarantined with Covid and lives about an hour away. Spoke with him last night , I’m hoping to make the drive tomorrow afternoon. I’ve ordered the TBird pickup so I’ll be watching for delivery next week!
It will soon be underway!

The Talman is home. Nice big chunky neck , bit of an adjustment but I like it. Serious neck dive sitting , some neck dive on a strap , so it looks like I’ll be changing the tuners. My Tbird pickup and surround are expected to arrive early next week. Timing is pretty good. I’m going to have a pro do the pickup routing as I don’t want it to look like I went at it with a dremel. I can do the pickup swap. It came strung with some black tape wounds , multicoloured ball ends , dark blue silk. Not sure of the manufacturer. They feel like brand new strings. I’ll leave them on for the time being. So at first it felt quite different , with a neck heavy balance , and very chunky neck. Mid weight. Not bad but heavier than the feather weights I normally play. I find myself becoming more comfortable by the day. Some time on it and it will become comfortable. It sounds pretty good as it is , but I’m committed to modding this thing.

Tbird pickup is done , I’ll be dropping a grey bobbin Fender Pbass pickup in the mid position , and changing the tuners and pots. I’m waiting for stock to come in before I can order. But we’ll under way …
