Or is it just a way to prevent the owner from after-market upgrades? I’d love to stick with Fender for a nice Ultra HSS Strat but that 3-hole mounting is making me lean more towards an Ibanez Prestige or Suhr.

I think it’s a superior design. I can’t speak towards their motives.

It is a good thing, but struggles to get any kind of universal adoption.
Pickups sound better if you can get them parallel with the strings as well as adjust the height. A strat probably is the guitar least in need of such a thing, but it is a good thing. If I was building guitars with humbuckers, I'd probably build them like that.

Didn’t Carvin use this design too?

Were they three or four screw? I don't remember. It has popped up at random times over the years.

Interesting. I do have a few strats with an HSS. On the one I changed pickups on, I went with a whole assembled guard. Also had an old Am Std with an HSH route and replaced with an HSH Duncan P-Rails assembly. Very cool options. H's are H/P/S capable. Doesn't do everything perfectly, but fun to play with.

Fender did it on my HH Jaguar as well, but I haven't needed to change the pickups.

I learned to like them on a Gretsch Bass I had. Easy to level the pickup.
