Tivo snagged an old "Cops" episode as a suggestion, which was an amusing street cop flashback for me, so I tagged the machine to "go for it", and wound up with about 60 episodes in no time.
Despite the episodes being "coast to coast, a few common patterns emerge:
Those confronted by the cops:
Stupid people doing stupid things to other stupid people, while consuming vast quantities of alcohol and/or drugs.
The cops themselves:
Sloppy, dangerous tactics
A lone cop getting several people out of a car, and then leaving them to mill around un-searched, while focusing on one individual.
Letting detained suspects keep lit cigarettes in their hands while talking to them.
Lone officer handcuffs a driver, puts him in the back of the radio car, and then lets his un-patted down passenger/buddy stand around with his hands in his pockets while he's practically standing on his head, searching under vehicle seats.
I dunno ... maybe these guys feel safer because there's a film crew standing there? Perhaps they're showing off?
Oh and odd language usage on the part of the cops:
"Is there anyone else 'at all' in the car?
"Do you have a drivers license 'at all' "
"Are there any drugs 'at all' in your pockets?"
"Have you ever hit your wife 'at all' "?

I've always thought they were staged and not real. Scripted.

I was addicted to that show for many years. Of course, being a scanner buff, it made for Redneck Saturday Night at my house watching COPS and then flipping on the police scanner at bedtime.

I’ve watched a few episodes. It seems to be self serving , but considering the theme song, I’m not surprised. I have been watching a show called Live PD that seems to be a bit better and less staged .

I could never watch that show. I always ended up yelling "SHOOT HIM!!!" at the television and waking up the dog.

I could never watch that show. I always ended up yelling "SHOOT HIM!!!" at the television and waking up the dog. That made me bust out laughing uncontrollably. Immediately pictured Chief Brody yelling it at Quint in a panic.
