Thought I would mention using a product called Semichrome Polish. My wife used it for years to polish a rather large brass deer I bought her in the 80’s. I sucessfully us it to polish out light scratches on my Fender and Sire Basses. It got 100% of the scratches from the body and 85-90% from the pickguard. It worked twice as good as 3M Scratch remover as only used a micro fiber cloth to apply and buff it out. Worked pretty fast!

Just checked the SDS sheet because brasso and other things use some pretty gnarly solvent bases that would be a bad idea around some plastics or lacquer, but it looks like that uses a naphtha base instead.

Did not hurt the pickguard or body. Brasso is very abrasive. That is the reason my wife used Semichrome on brass.

Yeah, I'd want to find a test spot with lacquer first, but from what I can tell it should be okay. Brasso has an ammonia base, which probably would munch lacquer (and a quick google search agrees with me), but I'm not positive.
My memory is fuzzy, but I remember the base solvents for a lot of those are pretty gnarly. Maybe my memory is bad on it because I used too much of it? I can't even remember what I was up to where I was trying this stuff...

Still on an instrument with Lacquer finish I would want to test a small spot.

There are all manner of products made by Meguiar's specifically designed for these types of finishes.
If you need a little "cutting" action, they have it. If you need to "polish" to a high luster, they have it ... and any anything in between.
Granted they are marketed mostly for automotive applications, but I don't see the difference in practice.

I have used ScratchX by Meguiar's on nitro finishes with great results. Got rid of pick marks and the like and didn't leave any dull spots in need of buffing.
