Our bedroom is on the second floor so, at this time of year, I usually look out the window about dawn to see if there's frost on the roof. This morning, just as I happened to do that, two coyotes who work the night shift trotted up our road, returning to the woods from yet another night of roaming the neighborhood to eat rats, garbage and people's cats. The day shift seems to focus more on gophers and ground squirrels in a nearby pasture, but they have to compete with a local bobcat, itinerant egrets, redtail hawks and an occasional eagle for those. That last one is just too dang big to be any sort of hawk that I'm aware of. While the dogs and I were walking a couple days ago, we passed a herd of 6 or 7 deer. Usually, it's more like two or three. They kept an eye on us, to be sure, but the dogs were leashed and are too small to cause them much concern anyhow. The dogs are curious, but they stay quiet so we're able to get reasonably close before the deer will start to ease away to re-establish the distance.
Now, when we come across a cat or a squirrel, that's another matter.
What sorts of critters you got around your place?

Armadillos, possums, raccoons, bobcats, coyotes, turkeys, turkey vultures, red hawks, an occasional eagle, owls, all manner of other bird species, squirrels, chipmunks, cottontail rabbits, an occasional Jackrabbit, a few nasty snakes, red foxes, ground hogs, gophers, moles, whitetail deer, even saw a red wolf once even though the authorities say there aren't any in Tennessee anymore. Poppychicken! I know what I saw. It was only standing about 30 feet from me. It stopped and we stared at each other for more than a minute before it decided I wasn't a threat and moved on. It was way too big and husky to be a coyote and had the wrong paint job. I have a friend who told me he saw a black bear at his place way out in the woods once. Those are just the ones I have either seen myself or friends have seen and told me about.

We have mountain lions, but I've only seen tracks. My buddy did see these ones, though: Also lots of pigs.
Coons, weasels, lots of owls, hawks and other raptors.

Deer, fox, opossums are common. We’re getting a lot of skunks now also. I don’t like that.

I actually prefer skunks over coons: coons seem to be compulsively destructive, at least, viewed from a human perspective. Though their odor isn't as strong as that of a skunk, they do smell pretty rank. Plus, if they can get on your roof, they're almost sure to use it as a latrine. Their feces often contain seemingly indestructible racoon round worm eggs, which can cause serious harm to humans if they get into your system.
