Have seen this discussed for guitars, that some like to always have their guitar volume up full and adjust their volume with their amp.
Others like to have the amp volume on full and adjust the volume with their guitars.
Which do you think is best for bass ?
At the places I play, I have the amp up around 6 and adjust the bass guitar volume on 4 to 5 but I've been pondering the merits of trying it differently to see if I get a better overall sound.
What do youse guys do ?

I turn the volume of the amp up to what I need and call it good. If I need quieter, I'll play softer or roll the knbobs off or use a volume pedal, if I need louder, I'll step on...a boost.

In the last band, the volume on my bass was usually at or near full up, and the amp set as needed. Most volume changes were done by playing harder or softer, and occasionally with a boost pedal. Lately, I've been leaning toward setting the bass lower and the amp higher if I join another band.

When I played Fender basses I noticed that the Jazz output really changed as you rolled off one volume knob or the other so I usually tried to keep them both full on or close to that. With active basses there is much more control so amp output control becomes easier.

My Guild Starfires have individual volume and tone knobs for each pickup + a master volume. I usually dime everything on the instrument and then bring the amp volume up to the desired level. If I want to bring down the volume a tiny bit, I use the master volume on the bass. My knowledge of how amplifiers work is very minimal, but I figure "feed everything the bass has got to the pedal board and then shape the tone from there on out".
I have a compressor, 10-band EQ pedal and a pre-amp pedal on the board, which is where I do most of the "twiddling" and then feed that into the amp set pretty much flat.

On all my passive basses it's full volume and full tone. On my active bass I sometimes push the bass more or less, or treble more or less depending on the song. But the actual volume still stays on 10.
My amp has a 10db footswitchable boost if I need to get louder (like on the Brown Eyed Girl bass solo!).

I generally roll the bass volume at the max and adjust from there. I have a preamp pedal these days so I may be inclined to control the volume from there and set my amp maybe halfway up or a little less.

I do not play the amp on full but at the level needed and adjust the bass’s volume as needed

I’ll often slightly back off the bass volume and then set the amp volume. The theory is if I need a bit more I can easily bring the bass up. I have a lot of headroom and usually run my amp around 3 or 4.

Easiest to do with single pickup basses or those that have a master volume knob.
