Until recently, I've never so-much as had a Jazzmaster in my hands, let-alone played one. Stratsophere had some lefty American Pro bodies (loaded) so I sprung for one. I added a Warmoth neck, Gotoh tuners and a Fender String tree - one like they use on these. I came out @$500 ahead of buying a new one.
Pictures later today. I'm waiting for the postlady to deliver the string tree.
I love the tones! The JM has quickly moved past the Strat in my world of Fender guitars. Tele - #1, JM - #2.

Jazzmasters are fantastic instruments. Capable of much more than the surf/alt/hipster/shoe-gaze genres they are often associated with.
If I could only have one Fender, it would be a Tele. But like you, I’d pick a Jazzmaster over a Strat for #2. I have all 3 currently but the Strat gets the least play.

The round, sweet tone of the Jazzmaster's pickups is something no other pickups can do. It's sort of like a P90, but less midrange-forward. They sound great with overdrive and distortion too. I had a late-60s JM for a few years but never warmed up to it because of the excessive controls and finicky vibrato. About 15 years ago I built one with Tele-like controls (vol, tone, and a Les Paul 3-way switch), and a Wilkinson vibrato. It is a sweetie.

Very nice! I love the tone of a Jazzmaster. What value POT and Cap did you use? I loved the tone of a Jazzmaster with 1meg pot and (I think-memory not so good on this) .01ufd cap???

I had an early 60's JM for a few years. Took it on the studio and the engineer lusted over it...badly. cool sound.

I GAS'd for a JM for a long time, never pulled the trigger. The Classic Player Series seems like a good choice and reasonably priced too. I just thought there would be too much overlap between my Fralin-equipped Tele and my MIM Strat. But you're convincing me otherwise.

Between the pickups and the trem it really has some pretty cool tones going on. Acoustically the wound strings have a piano thing going on. Even more than a Strat.

Had 2, a CAR MIJ and a Squier J Mascis. Both were awesome instruments. Like Geno said, they really like pedals. I replaced the saddles or bridge on both. That whammy system stayed in tune better than any strat I ever had, better than Bigsbys too.
I’ll differ on the rocker switches though - that’s where the “Jazz” tone of Jazzmaster comes from. Superfat sound.
Dammit, now I want one!

One of these babies thru a 63 Fender reverb tank, pickup switch in the middle = surf guitar Promised Land.

So, are we talking Jazzmaster with jazzmaster pups or humbuckers? I’m thinking I would like the jazzmaster pickups. I need to sell something first only I like the guitars I have now.

Mine has the new “Pro” JM pickups. Whatever they’re called.
I recently built a JM, 24.75” scale with buckers. It’s in the other forum.

LTB, I used 250k pots and a .050uf cap for the tone control. I've thought about tweaking the tone cap, but when I pick up the guitar and play it, it sounds great as is. No need to tinker with it for now. The pickups are modern Fender-brand Jazzmasters.

If you are happy with the tone I cannot see any reason to change anything 😉
