I'm familiar with the cost and maintenance comparisons overall, but from an electronics POV which is more sophisticated and potentially costly? Seems EVs by definition...

The fire-hazard factor with EVs scares the crap out of me. Plus, if recent news reports are to be believed, EVs aren't so reliable when the temperature really drops.

I’ve done all the online training for our class 8. Yowza! Deep technology.

I guess EV should be simpler in that a modern internal combustion engine is so reliant on computer control and electronic sensors in order to even run ...
As you state ... it seems EV would by definition eliminate all of that aspect.

The radio display on the Hyundai Ioniq shows the station frequency numbers in little pictures of ...vacuum tubes. I'm so impressed.

I still believe the consumers should have a choice.

I've heard it both ways.
One way they say car dealers don't want to sell EVs because of low maintenance meaning less income via the service center... but I think "maintenance" just means "oil changes" in that regard. In another report about Hertz downsizing their EV rental fleet which they invested heavily into, they cited the high maintenance costs. They didn't give details what that meant.
My guess is that parts in an EV are a lot like LED bulbs... they promise to last XXXXX miles/hours/whatever, but they could go at any time. Many will last as long as advertised, but it is kinda random. And, a battery going out isn't a few hundred bucks to replace, either.
This is why I REALLY don't want EVs taking over the market... many, many people rely on second and third ownership vehicles for affordable and reliable transportation. A world where we take out all of those old Civics and Camrys and replace them with cars that will need five figure repairs for a second owner is pretty bleak.

I believe that BEV is a waypoint along the journey. I do not think it is the destination.

I believe that BEV is a waypoint along the journey. I do not think it is the destination. I always think of something Jeremy Clarkson said years ago. Something to the effect of "This feels like 8-track, this feels like betamax, this feels like laserdisc.... it feels like the thing that happens before the REAL thing".

My little sister (no pics) got a Tesla a year and a half ago. She lives in Fort Collins. She was stoked...they loved it. Great vehicle and she was really extolling its virtues. Half way through the first winter....she was done. Range dropped precipitously in the cold weather and they traded it in.
I think they might be viable in southern states and the west coast, but here in Iowa, the cold, cold winters would really take the wind out of their sails. That said, I still see plenty of them around, but I've considered them "not ready for prime time" and my sister's experience is enough to make me say no. We just bought a new vehicle two weeks ago. I did not consider an EV.
I might have considered a hybrid, but the battery thing isn't really solved yet, IMO.

It now appears that GM is stepping back from BEV to hybrids.
Hybrids have been around a long time. I.e. Prius. I’ve been baffled by the plunge into plug-in battery electric. It seems more a social contagion rather than a sound solution.
