Melanie Safka passed, age 76. A part of our late 60s-early 70s music experience, and certainly a object of infatuation as a lovely longhaired folksinger/songwriter. She gave us 'Lay down (Candles in the rain)', 'Brand new key', 'Look what they've done to my song' among other songs that made their way to our own coffee house performances. This one stung a little, as we had seen her about five years back in a backroom-of-record-store concert in front of 70 fans, accompanied by her son. Her rapport with us was so folksy and intimate. She certainly aged, and cut back most performances since her husband/producer passed in 2010, but didn't miss a beat reconnecting with a live audience. Her voice was not what it used to be, but somehow it made the emotional moments more real. And besides we sang along with half the good stuff. Lay down, Melanie

This is one of my favorite videos and i don't even care for Miley but she does a good job here. So does Melanie. She looks like she is having the time of her life. Sounds nice with headphones.

Until I read the news of her passing, I had no idea there was a kerfuffle over "Brand New Key", whose lyrics were perceived as some kind of sexual innuendo.
"Well, I've got a brand-new pair of roller skates
You've got a brand-new key
I think that we should get together
And try them on to see"

"Well, I've got a brand-new pair of roller skates You've got a brand-new key I think that we should get together And try them on to see" I wasn't aware of the controversy either. I was reading her account of writing the song. She had been on a prolonged fast and drove past a McDonalds. She went and had a burger, fries and shake and the experience reminded her of evenings rollerskating and diners which led to the song's idea.

I liked Brand new key also. It always took me back to my childhood, that song always brightened my mood.
