We all probably experience some forgetfulness .. lost keys, something I was supposed to get at the grocery store, but didn't, etc. But that's different than dementia. While I dread old age confining me to a wheel chair, the real horror for me, would be losing my mind.
I thought this description of normal forgetting and problem forgetting was apt:
“There are examples of people coming out of shopping malls and being unable to remember where they parked the car. Well, that’s just normal forgetting.”
A more worrying version of the story would be, “If you come out of the mall and you can’t remember, ‘Did I drive here, did I take a bus or did somebody drop me off?’”

Yeah, my own personal experience with dementia was watching my uncle slip. A real witty and academic guy who was never at a loss to share something insightful. Happened fast, too. The first time I took note was startling. Ever an auto enthusiast I showed him my new car. A week later I showed it to him again. Shortly afterward he and my aunt found my mother deceased on the kitchen floor. The trauma seemed to accelerate the condition and he kept re-experiencing shock when told she was gone. The truly horrific thing is he was also losing his eyesight and hearing. The idea of a lost mind trapped in a body without hearing and sight is simply awful.

The lovely Dr.Mrs Rufustelestrat works in a memory care unit, and sees this progression every day. Some hit a plateau where they have some memory loss, repeat things, or develop strange behavior like posting random pictures, but others become and active danger to themselves. Simply stated this is a disease that because of the increased lifespan, has become an issue we all may face. Back when humans died at 65 or less this was less of an issue.

Simply stated this is a disease that because of the increased lifespan, has become an issue we all may face. Back when humans died at 65 or less this was less of an issue. I remember learning this when I was researching a paper, years ago. Alois Alzheimer, along with having the disease named after him, also discovered that the occurrence of Alzheimers increased greatly over the age of 75 (at least I remember that being the age - I could be mistaken).
