I secured a gig with the county council for the arts playing at their art gallery for a painters show opening. 5:30 to 7 for a very reasonable stipend. I say different because they want background music, basically do not distract patrons and keep it down so they can easily converse. The emailed me some of his work, rural landscapes. I am at a bit of a loss for material, all my acoustic songs that I did not write are 40 years old at least. I am leaning towards a mix of vocal and instrumental music, predominantly original. Here is the link I sent them of my playing.
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

My first impression is that your voice is too good to lie in the background. It would tend to interfere with general conversation and focus attention on YOU. Don't put much weight on this though. It's your rodeo ! With paintings etc, my first impression would be jazz instrumental or pop/hip hop/latin instrumental. So, this is your opportunity to whip up some rhythm backing tracks on your guitar or keyboard and add some lead overplaying for 1.5 hours. The goal ? Fun elevator music. Having an upbeat singer songwriter type wouldn't be my first choice, but who knows ? It IS a rather odd role for a musician that's usually out front and center but perhaps its a challenge to take ! If it were me, I'd stuff a looper full of original backing tracks of guitar or keyboard and add quiet lead to on top. If I had time. If I was lazy, I'd just bring a stereo boom box, set it to a radio station, and then play lead over it. Quietly. It would be familiar music, and there'd be some non-obtrusive "art" to it...I'd take on any song and style, and do it in real time. But that's my rodeo. In your case, maybe you should just practice the stuff you need to practice for your BIG performance...quietly ! Kill two birds with one stone, right ? Well, have fun with THAT challenge. Some restaurant asked for background music 7 years ago, and I was a bit at a loss myself at the time ! It's kinda OPPOSITE of what we normally do...
