After an extensive, and exhaustive, search we are pleased to announce we’ve hired the next head coach to lead the…. Oh wait, that’s for another thread.
After an extensive, and not so exhausting, search I decided to pull the trigger on a Yamaha Red Label FGX3 from Sweetwater. I also looked pretty hard at the Taylor 117e, but I know from previous experience that I don’t care for the ES2 electronics. The Taylor also lacked the depth in bottom end compared to the Yamaha, IMO.
Anyway, looking forward to getting it (Monday). Hopefully, I’ll dig it as much as I think I will.

The FGX3 looks nice. As much as I love my Martin D17-M dread, mic'ing it can be a challenge to avoid it's boomy character. I'd love a Martin 000 but they're just too pricey. Scratched that itch with a cheap Yamaha FS800 recently. I've also struggled a wee bit with 1.75 nut widths on acoustics, which is why I went with the D17M (1 11/16 nut width).
Yamaha makes good acoustics for cheap. I can only imagine the pricier ones are even better.

You'll love it! I got a FGX5 and I love mine. So much I sold my Martin D41 after getting it. It showed up today. I’m quite pleased with it so far. First:: Kudos to Sweetwater & my “Sales Engineer” (I really hate that title, lol). This was a great recommendation from him based on my tonal preferences and budget. I like to have a well balanced tone, with a lot of bass, but not BOOMY. And, I like warm higher tones, not too thin. I hope that makes sense, lol. Anyway, he nailed what I wanted. I love how balanced it is. So, that’s my plug for Sweetwater and my sales guy. As far as the guitar goes: Tone- It’s really a well balanced guitar from the lows to highs. Again, it has a lot of bass without being boomy and the highs are not thin. Both ends really blend well with the mids to form a very balanced tone, IMO. Fit & Finish - It doesn’t have a single flaw. I’ve owned a few Yamahas in the past and and a couple of Taylors (I also considered the 117e) and one thing I can say about both is they are very consistent in their builds. Action - Again, spot on. Neck relief is perfect. It’s a hair high for my personal taste, but I *think* I can fix that with a very slight truss rod adjustment should I choose. For now, I’m going to play it and see if I get used to it. Also, to be clear, that’s just personal preference. The guitar is set up perfect for what most players would probably like. I don’t think I’ve ever bought an acoustic that I didn’t think the action was a hair high. Well, that’s it for now.

Update: Took me about a minute to get the action down just a hair. That’s all it took. Good to go now.
Edit: I got called away to dinner so didn’t get to finish my update. Let my update serve as a reminder to those of you that like to do minor setups and repairs yourself. When I did my initial inspection of the guitar, I checked the usual stuff. I looked for scratches, dents, etc… Once satisfied, I checked the neck. I didn’t take measurements (other than fingers and straight edge). I just did a visual to insure it wasn’t warped, had normal relief, etc… Next, I started strumming a few chords. This was my mistake because this is when I noticed the action was a hair high for my taste, I had an epiphany.
The guitar was in perfect tune, but sounded like it might be a hair flat so I stuck a tuner on it. Yup, every string was exactly a 1/2 step down. Tuned it back up and BAM!
Lesson is don’t screw with your instrument before tuning it. I’m just glad I realized the mistake before I tweaked the truss rod.

I like the plugged in sound. Flexible, and none of that quacky sound, which I hate.

I like the plugged in sound. Flexible, and none of that quacky sound, which I hate. I haven’t plugged it in yet, but that’s one of the reasons I chose it over the Taylor 117e. I’ve had previous experience with the ES2 and didn’t care for it. Everyone I talk to says the Atmosfeel is a lot better.
