I was notified by my financial institution that my social security number was compromised in the AT&T data breach. The info provided instructed me to contact Experian. I spent some time confirming with all 3 credit reporting agencies that my credit freeze was still in place. I then called Experian and after some time on hold was told to contact Social Security Administration. Called them and was told there'd be a 32 minute hold time and opted for a callback. Got an automated callback 40 minutes later and was put on hold for 22 minutes. Finally got a breathing entity on the phone and was told they'd flag my number and the only impact it'll have on me is that I cannot change my address or financial institution where deposits are made without going to a Social Security office.
And this was this morning's continuing education in misanthropy.

I'm back on the phone with SSA to see if this lock will complicate my application for Medicare later this year. 🤪

I’ve been the victim of data breaches several times. In fact, I suspect my SS number is common knowledge among the scumbags. In each instance I’ve been given free credit protection for at least a year, sometimes longer. I’ve had fraud alerts in place forever. I hope this turns out to be nothing to worry about but I know you’ll worry anyway.

I hope this turns out to be nothing to worry about but I know you’ll worry anyway. Yeah, me and millions of other people. The weird thing is I don't ever recall being an AT&T acct holder. Even back in the day when our phone bills may have been linked I believe my wife had the accounts in her name. Not really worried, I've had our credit frozen for years with the 3 agencies and this move is the last action I'll take. I'm not going to pay some entity to stand guard over my identity. My brother's wife had her SSN stolen a couple years ago and they're still waiting for a tax refund from 2022. Technology has really given these scumbags the means to rob people.

The intelligence and military groups can tell you when and where some target is taking a dump, but with the internet, which they created, they are powerless to stop this BS. Rather than spend the next 100 billion or so on the next big threat that affects me not, how's about a few billion to put an end to these predators ? I was breached as well, free one year subscription is not a solution!

At this point, just assume your information is compromised. Best thing you can do is freeze your credit with the three credit companies. It's free and easy to do. At the rate we are going, we'll need to do multi factor authentication just to buy a cup of coffee!

And this was this morning's continuing education in misanthropy. I am with AT&T fiber optics internet. Dropped AT&T Uverse as the pricing got redictulous. I then chose Direct TV Streaming and extremely happy with it (yes AT&T owns them too) much better rate and more perks certain tv shows can be restarted as long as it hasn't finished it's slotted time (con is forced commercials with no fast forward. There is rewind though. Also many apps can be accessed through the remote along with ability to watch some stuff when you wish (not talking about the recording ability that it also has). So thank you Larry for letting us know some of the stuff we will need to do.!
