So, EJ has a new signature Fender Strat, a '54 repica of his famous early '54, which he referred to as "Virginia" for the name on the masking tape in one of the cavities. Fender has a You Tube with EJ talking about the two new guitars, the production guitar and the $9k!) Custom Shop version. So, that all struck a memory cell, the name "Virginia" seemed familiar. I've had a "mother of toilet seat" yellow '54 Champion lap steel for the last 51 year. I got it from a guy for $20 when he walked into the store I was managing and wanted to sell it. some time ago I took some photos of the pickup & cavity, etc. I looked back at them and sure enough it's Fender Mom was Virginia. (Wonder if it's made of sasafrass?)

Cool! I think Gloria was another woman who had her name on masking tape in vintage Fenders. I wonder if there are any others?

You'll find "Lupe" in many of the tweed era amps.

I saw Eric last week in Kansas City, he played the new signature Virginia for most of the show, other than 2 songs where he played a Les Paul and half a song where he played his real '54 (not Virginia, which he sold years ago) after he broke a string.
This was the only time I've seen EJ on tour with a second guitarist, who can also rip..

SoK66-I had a Fender lap steel like yours and mine had a small piece of paper with Virginia written on it!
Now I know who Virginia is!
Thanks

Whoa, that is *cool*! SoK66, that little piece of tape is more valuable than the entire lap steel ) Guitar players are a goofy lot. Remember when the whole "Abby" (she made pickups at Fender for years) thing happened? All of a sudden, pickups with her name we being sold for $400 a pop. Within mere minutes, Seymour Duncan announced he too had an octogenarian Hispanic woman making pickups at his factory. I am not making this up.

Now the Seymour Duncan thing I hadn't heard of. That is interesting LOL

That poor little lap steel has been dissed for the last 50 years, but refuses to give in to bullying! My first wife's 2 year old found it and used the steel in the case as a drumstick on th strings, leaving a serries of little dings all along the position markeer plate. Then the chipboard case disintegrated. Then I loaned it to a friend and discovered he'd purloined the pickup and stuck it in his Telecaster. I got it and the pickup back, reinstalled it and undid the pillage. Then the plastic tuner buttons disintegrated. All the while I remind myself I paid $20 for it. About 12 years ago I found a hard case that it fit and there it has remained. But I may have to find out if the wood is sassafrass, right? imgur.com/5fDpqIC
