Our new house has a room that Mrs. Slacker (no pics) has named the "music room". This is awesome for me as it's dedicated to my guitar stuff, our piano and also my records and turntable.
Previously I had my albums and turntable connected to our surround sound system with the records stored in an entertainment center we no longer own.
Going forward, I want to have a reasonably small cabinet (think 14-24" deep and up to 48" wide, maybe 24-36" tall) to store the albums in. I plan to have the turntable sit on top with some powered speakers (to keep things compact). I'm not a hard-core audiophile, I just like the ritual of playing albums and want to retain that.
Ideally, something unique would be cool. I want a quality piece (no pressboard, mdf, etc.) and something antique/repurposed would be really cool. Got any cool ideas of something to look for that would fit the general concept?

Depends on how well insulated your turntable is. I have zero issues with this set-up. It's not what I'd prefer, I'd rather have the speakers on stands but one deals with what one deals with.
I don't know if it matters that the speakers are acoustic suspension or shielded but I get zero hum, feedback, etc.

As to storage, look for an old credenza in the style you want. There's always the ubiquitous stuff from Ikea (Costco too).

Again, no issues with the set-up in the photo above. I've had a few audio guys tell me how wrong it is. Fact is, they are wrong in the case anyway. Still, the benefit of stands is adjusting for best imaging.

Still, the benefit of stands is adjusting for best imaging. It is not conducive to extracting top performance from the gear - is this a better way of phrasing it? ;-) Then again, your speakers produce no bass (really), which helps this not get out of control as much as it might otherwise. |

I wish.
The system I listen to most is in my office on the third floor. My turntables are on wall mounted shelves but my records are all around the house because I don't have room to keep them in one area. And yeah, milk style crates is where a lot of the records live.
My main speakers are floor standers -- but I wouldn't have a turntable on the same piece of furniture as a speaker.

But I don't disagree with the concept in general of keeping one's turntable isolated. Just can't do it in this case and it make no difference in this case either. There is theory and there is actual fact. If you heard what I hear from this system, I suspect you'd agree with me that, in this case, it's just fine.

The approach I took was to design a cabinet (actually it's two joined together) where everything is kept behind glass. The turntable slides out on ball bearing slides and locks in place when in use. The lower cabinet is 24" deep and the upper 18". There is a false wall in the back of both that give me a 2" space to run all cables between the two and then all is enclosed with a back panel...no exposed cables.

That is actually lower than I would have expected - are those not Superzeros? I can’t really tell on my phone. I thought SZs cut off at 85Hz or so. |

By the way, I didn’t mean that they are lacking in how they sound (the speakers) but rather that lower frequencies than what they produce are often what could induce very obvious audible issues on the turntable.
However, vibration of any kind gets in the way and gear would sound better without having that imparted on them.
I also agree with you that one’s got to do what one’s got to do. In my current (temporary) arrangement I did mount a wall shelf for the turntable, but there are limitations on where I can place the equipment and speakers (though those are also on dedicated stands).

Cruise garage sales and furniture salvage warehouses (hotel furniture!) for a quality night stand; one with a drawer and an open-front bottom that is at least 14" high. These pieces are generally in the range of 20"-24" wide, which will be room enough for about 100 LPs in their jackets. Look for dovetail joinery on the drawer; this indicates good solid construction. If you find something that's perfect but the wood grain is ugly or damaged, repair the surface and shoot black lacquer on it. Or dark stain or some other color like surf green!
