Here's hoping this is a question for the guitar forum....
Does anybody have them on one of their guitars? I have a set on a Gibson ES-135. They're OK, but I find them kind of of boxy, i.e. very focused on the mid-range without much high end. I can see how that works in certain contexts, but I think there are better options for an all-round pup. I've asked a local winder to make me a set of P90s, which I guess sums up my verdict on P100s, at least the ones in my guitar. Any other opinions?

I love P90s but I've never tried a 100.

I like them for what they are, which is a quiet, dark-sounding P90. I have them in a stock ES135 from 2000. They tend to work better for me when playing crunchy stuff. For crisp clean country and jangle rock, bring your Tele!

I think we may have the same guitar, Peegoo. Tobacco burst? Anyway, P100s totally have a place in the sonic landscape, it's just not one go to a lot. I spend a lot time playing on my own, so I gravitate to more full-spectrum pups.
Anyway, funny story. Before I ordered my P90s, I did a bunch of reading and YouTubing on P90s so I would be asking for things that P90s actually do. After I described what I was looking to a friend at the local guitar shop who was placing the order for me, he looked at me as said, "I understand. You want a Tele." Total deadpan.

Funny!!! Yes, we may have brothers from another mother. If you're unaware, the center block on these is balsa. Gibson called it "chromite" because they figured guitar players would run screaming to the hills if they knew there were parts of a wind-up rubberband aeroplane in there. Goofy! Who cares? It's wood, it's lightweight, and it sounds great. Here's mine: But you are right; I'd probably play this guitar more if the pickups had a wider spectrum than they do. I think this is the reason why the P100 never really got traction with players. Now you have me thinking about dropping in a pair of P90s. I do have some Gibson units I could pop right in there...

Don't know what your P100 pickups came factory installed with, but you might try going to a higher value on the pots on your wiring harness (from say 250K ohms up to 500K ohms, or from 500K ohms up to 1 Meg) to get a bit more high end bite and sizzle. Should get you closer to a real P90, which I love, but without the noise.

How do you ruin a Gibson P90? Make a P100 out of it!

Hi! Yes, when I heard of Gibson releasing the P100 I was all over it! A P90 w/out the hum - what's not to like? Well, until I tried one myself cheers - C.

If you want a P90 that sounds pretty much like a P90 but without the noise, the Kent Armstrong Stealth 90 is a good 'un. Some folks don't like 'em, but they sound great to my one good ear. Here's a link to 'em

I had one in an Epiphone LPJ. It seemed like a generic high output pickup. Not much character. I replaced it with a P90 and never looked back.

Lifeless would be an apt descriptor for the P100. It is nothing like a P90. I have numerous guitars with Gibson P90’s and one with a Dan Grosh P90, more or less a hotter Gibson P90. If you can deal with a little noise, the P90 is a great choice. Many great songs/albums were recorded using P90’s. Santana Abraxas, Mountain Mississippi Queen, many Who songs. It has been around a long time but is still one of Gibson’s best kept secrets!
