Just bought one preemptively for my truck when the factory battery started fading after 14 years.
I know the arguments in their favor. Just wondered if, based on first-hand experience, people here think they're worth the extra cost in terms of reliability and longevity.
Your opinions, gentlemen?
I'm optimistic.

If you got 14 years out of the factory battery, you must be a Jedi Knight.
I'm more leaning toward lithium ion batteries. Had one in the bike and it was the best battery I ever had. Cranked it everytime, even on hot restarts that normally would have resulted in a kick back.

If you got 14 years out of the factory battery, you must be a Jedi Knight. I hear ya: after 10 years I was thinking, "well, this can't go on much longer". But it did.
Probably the mild winters here were a major, contributing factor. But no other battery I've ever had even came close to that kind of service.

I bought one recently for my Land Cruiser. I haven't had it long enough to give you a report, but so far so good.

I had an optima that was still going strong after 8 years, then I sold the truck.
If the option is available I will get a Lithium battery when my current one goes bad.

Well this is the first time i've ever heard of AGM batteries. It seems like it would be a great idea for my golf cart but I just bought a new set of traditional lead acid batteries. Checking fluid levels in the 6 batteries under the seat and partial cover is somewhat of a PITA.

You will need a different charger if you go AGM in your golf cart. Trojen is the battery of choice.
They did try to market a AGM but it never took off. Been out of the loop for 12 years or so, so things may have changed.
The AGM specific charger is required due to finish charge voltage differences.

Here in NJ due to the frequent harsh winter temps I have found that Preventative replacement saves me a lot of headaches with worn batteries that work in warm weather then don't have enough power in cold weather. So can't speak to AGM batteries.

Since my cart has an on board charger I guess I'll stick with conventional lead acid batteries.

Wow 14 years? I feel like I'm on borrowed time after 3 in this Florida heat.

14 years is pretty amazing.
I use AGM batteries in the bikes, but didn't realize that they were available for cars.

I don’t know how I feel as I don’t know what an AGM battery is. But, I just had the Motorcraft battery in our 2015 Escape replaced last Friday. $163!

I don’t know how I feel as I don’t know what an AGM battery is. Absorbed Glass Mat batteries are constructed differently than the traditional flooded battery. In AGM batteries (also called starved electrolyte), there is a thin ultra-fine fiberglass mat sandwiched between the plates that are saturated with battery acid to about 95% of what they can hold. This mat is then packed in between the plates and slightly compressed, then welded/soldered in place. Because the plates and mats are packed fairly tight, they are almost immune to vibration. AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) sealed battery technology was originally invented in 1980, and developed and introduced in 1985 for military aircraft where power, weight, safety, and reliability were paramount considerations.

I picked up an Exide Edge AGM24F (710 CCA) for my Pilot back in 2017 and it seems to be going strong, even after cold nights. This is with two Streamlight flashlights on constant trickle charge.

I've been using Optima brand AGMs for about 10 years in 6 vehicles. Some have lasted about 3-4 years; some lasted 6-7 years. Best thing about them is very little corrosion of the battery clamps and cables.

Battery of choice for boats. Handle the frequent charging cycles for electric trolling motors really well.
Recently installed one in my wife's CRV when it needed a new battery. (Actually the shop ordered the wrong battery and gave it to me at no additional cost to me!)
I think they are overall better than your standard wet cell battery.

Stuck a Duralast Platinum in the truck yesterday. Starts great right now. I'll get back to you in 14 years and let you know if it held up as well as my original battery.

Here's a comparison between the lead acid and the AGM although it has obvious ulterior motives.
