I've been "working from home" these last few weeks, and I prefer some background noise to working in complete silence.
I've been alternating between morning TV (Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond etc.) , music radio, and streaming, but I prefer something relaxing and not too engaging that I can listen to and get on with work without getting too involved in.
I think I've finally found a winner - Steely Dan
How about yourselves, any suggestions?

I have my main audio system up in my home office as well as a separate system for my computers. They both sound so good - to me - that I have a hard time focusing on work when I'm listening to music. And I see no point in listening to music I don't like just for background noise.
If I must have something in the background, it has to be something so boring or mind-numbingly stupid that it's easy for me to ignore.
Sports talk radio works every time.

Ronnie Milsap is the top CD in my stack. If I decide to turn to the stereo out in the garage … Ronnie is always first up.

Great call Larry. I must admit I'd never heard of him , even though I love Country, and play in a Country Rock band. He's right up my street. Started off with Houston Solution, and worked from there. Love it.

I bought a Bose Soundtouch for the living room awhile back just for streaming. I have local and UK stations streaming and it picks up all my music from Apple and Amazon. Actually sounds great in that room

Just to resurrect this thread; I was looking for something to listen to this morning, and I couldn't remember the name of Larry's recommendation, so I had to search all of my posts. Ronnie Mislap it is. Playing on my Echo now.

I've been listening to online streaming SOMA FM Groove Salad or Groove Salad Classic down low while I work for at least 15 years - It's actually the only music that I feel that I don't have to mute when I pick up the phone. Not distracting and actually helps me keep focused these days.

I can’t listen to music at work but back when I was studying a lot would alternate between Mozart’s piano sonatas, piano and horn concertos, and Bach’s French and English suites, among other baroque and classical pieces. Probably have heard every Mozart piano sonata over a hundred times lol.

Probably have heard every Mozart piano sonata over a hundred times lol. Classical music does it for me as well. Mostly Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and maybe early Romantic eras. There's some modern Romantic and Post-war era stuff that gets too weird or engaging for me. Classical music is supposed to make you smahtah.

I can get tired of constant music. I have a small TV that I can glance at while at my desk computer. My goto channel to watch is Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Those old movies can often be followed by just the dialog, so I don't have to look at it all the time. The video portion doesn't have a lot of flashes (what's up with fade-through-white scene changes these days?). Also, there are no blaring commercials to assault me.

I tend to stream music without words while working, I can't concentrate otherwise. So, a lot of jazz, classical, and acoustic guitar.

The sound of silence. Not the song .... the silence.

I just started a Spotify (free) to try. I like the fact that you can create playlists and have them play in order or choose shuffle mode. 268 songs so far on my "Summer" playlist.

I've got music streaming in my office all day every day. These days I'm listening to one of three Internet stations, generally:
Classic FM London; Radio Caroline Flashback; The Jazz Groove.
Got close to 1,500 CDs across pretty much all musical genres down there; pretty much gathering dust; considering what to do with them. It's a musical and cultural legacy curated by my curiosity and musical tastes, so not so anxious to just get rid of them.

It's a musical and cultural legacy curated by my curiosity and musical tastes, so not so anxious to just get rid of them. It is a tough call to make. I have nowhere near that amount (maybe 500), and decided what I needed to do was keep the front booklet (assuming there was one, sometimes there isn't) and the disc in plastic sleeves, and store them in boxes. Two of these boxes were sufficient to store all of my CDs, plus all of my DVDs. And they fit very neatly, side by side, on a shelf in my entertainment unit's cabinet. CD Storage boxes
You could fit 1500 CDs in a few of these boxes and they would take up much less space. Which, of course, makes it easier if you want to keep them. I don't buy DVDs anymore for myself, only for my daughter. She likes having them because we have an old portable DVD player that she uses when we travel, or sometimes in her room. I do still buy CDs of certain bands to keep my collection complete. But its become a rare event.

I'm retired, so when I'm "working", it's generally on some project around the house and often involves power tools. I don't like any distractions while I'm using machines that could remove a finger (or fingers) in the blink of an eye, so I don't listen to music while using them. Even if I felt comfortable doing so, I'd only be able listen sporadically since I'm constantly putting on/taking off ear protection to preserve what's left of my hearing from the noise of the tools.
Back while I was working a "9-5", I usually listened to an FM radio station that played a mix of blues, country, "Americana", rock and bluegrass.
Heard an interesting piece on BBC radio last night that said that many people who are working from home due to the COVID miss the ambient sounds of the office/workplace so there are recordings on offer of that sort of stuff: keyboards clicking, people whispering, co-workers walking past, papers shuffling, drawers opening and closing: that sort of thing. I guess a lot of people must be feeling pretty isolated.

I guess that's why I didn't miss office noise.
