You see Strats (and Teles) branded with specific years donning custom paint, but I wonder if they were actually even available in those years. For instance, the American Vintage '59 Strat in Sherwood Green. Love the color, actually have a USACG alder body in Sherwood on order from MJT to reconstruct my birth year Strat. But was that color even available in 59? Seems more of a 60's custom order. Since most of the vintage reissues have taken liberties with fret size, neck radius, RWRP pickups and 3 vs 5 way switches, I can see color schemes being a flexible thing as well.

If I am not mistaken, that was one of several colors introduced in 1960.

I am of the opinion that Fender often uses "year names" as a simple identifier and nothing more. Very little relates to that actual year of manufacture.
