I still enjoy watching football -particularly around playoff time- but the excessive celebrating is getting to me.
I recall a time when spiking the ball in the endzone after a TD catch was considered crass, but NOW: dancing, quickie posing for team pics, dunking ball over the crossbar, pretending to be bowling, rowing, etc -- it's all too much.
I *think* there's an 'excessive celebrating' penalty but it seems to me these showboats are getting away with way too much. It's undignified! (he sputtered) Thoughts?

Totally agree. The antics of today’s players sure don’t teach young people much about sportsmanship.

Pretty much a reflection of much of our culture these days (said another old geezer).

Imagine you are at work and break into a celebration every time you do your job. Their job is to play football and act like you’ve been there before. I find it annoying but yes I am a geezer.

The rule was changed to allow celebrations 2-3 yearsa go
Because the fans wanted it.
Remember it is all about the show, not the game.

The NFL and TV don't care if you like it or not, as long as you have a reaction. I remember when the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders were pretty controversial. I'm surprised a bunch of rock n rollers would be upset about changing times.

Vince would not approve of a great many things connected with the game these days.
Remembering Vince Lombardi, my favorite quote of his that used to be posted of a sign board in my shop, "Fatigue makes cowards of us all".

It's most entertaining when some defensive player breaks into a ridiculous celebratory jig after making a play -- as it's twelve minutes into the fourth quarter and his team is 30 points behind.
Yeah -- you the Man.

When long hair for men came into vogue in the 60s someone asked Vince if he'd let his players grow out their hair. His very sensible answer was (more or less) "So long as it doesn't give an opponent something more to grab onto while tackling." I can't imagine what he'd think of these guys today with their long dreds. I'm surprised there aren't more clumps of hair yanked out every week.

Bart Starr told a story about the first time he scored a TD and then celebrated. When he got back to the sidelines, he expected a pat on the back from Lombardi. Instead, he received a stern look and the following advise, "Son, the next you get in the endzone, act like you've been there before."
