I took the plunge and bought a 2020 Toyota Camry. Normally I would prefer to buy used...but the time just seemed right. I got a decent deal. Toyotathon.
I traded in my 2009 Honda Accord with 180K+ miles on it. I didn't get as much for it as I thought I might, but it needed a new timing chain, so...
I just like the styling on the SE model, plus it's a little more sporty than the LE. I really wanted white...but the dealership only had black, gray, and red in the more basic offerings. I really didn't want gray - it's just too...gray.
I didn't really want a red car. So black looked like a good option. It also had the "black-out badges" option, which was sort of cool. But the red one was calling. It just looks a bit more unique. With 80% of the cars on the road being black, white, or silver/gray...it just seemed like a brighter option.
I admit - it took me a couple of days to warm up to driving a red car. But now I'm diggin' it.

Was this your first new car? I bought my first new one in 2017, just because at age 71 I had never had a new car.
Probably more of a culture shock for me than you .... all those gizmos, screens and such. Still kind of a hoot when I get an e-mail telling me my right front tire is down 2 lbs.

You'll like it. My RAV4 is Barcelona Red. I was tired of silver.

I too dont buy brand new. I got my Subaru Forester (2016) in 2017 with 8600 miles and full warranty for less than Kelly Blue book. Only had white. Do you know how many white SUV type cars are on the road? More than you can count! So now I blend in traded in my fire red (not mid-life crisis cherry red) Mustang in (2006 with 150K miles) as it was breaking down and I am getting old enough to NOT want to crouch to get in a car or have to climb out. Lots o bells and whistles. Did not think I needed em but I dig the heated seats on a cold winter morning. Dropped the Sirus radio as I now work from home but the stereo is great. Love the large moon roof (with the pull shade for summer) and it fully opens for spring driving. I guess the bottom line is while I dont need these extras I do enjoy most of em

I buy new mostly (yes, i know the drawbacks). My last purchase was a one year old fusion sport that had 2500 miles on it, driven by the sales manager. Saved $10k, got a free extended warranty and, from Ford's perspective, i am the first owner.
Love the features, it's really comfortable, and the 325hp turbo six is a nice change from my usual underpowered 4 banger. It's also AWD which I'm addicted to. Living in Iowa at the top of a long steep hill, it's a must for me.

That sounds like a nice beast slacker! I'm more of a show-over-go guy, so the 4 cyl Camry is fine for me. And it does have some pep. Oddly, before I had my Accord I had a 2000 Nissan Maxima - 6 cyl. Honestly, that car was so under-powered and lacked the pep I now enjoy.

Nice! I'm not really a bells and whistles kinda guy, but I'm spoiled now by the car I bought new in 2017. When I get into another car that has no voice commands capability and I have to push buttons and turn knobs, I'm reminded of Engineer Scott in the first Star Trek movie, when they went back in time to earth and he tried to use a desktop computer:
Scotty: "Computer." [no response]. "Com-PYOO-ter..." [no response].
Earthling: "Umm, here, use the mouse."
Scotty [amused]: "How quaint."
GREAT scene.
Ya done good with red! Black looks dirty unless you keep it wiped down all the time. Other colors just look better without all the primping; unless you're into it and that is your hobby, of course.
Toyota and Honda are making some pretty good stuff these days; sadly, the quality of Toyota trucks has slipped a bit over the last five years. Nissan used to be right up there with Toyota and Honda, but from what I've seen their quality has dropped quite a bit across the board since their merger with Renault...YMMV.

If you're a guy who keeps vehicles for a long time (like us), every now and then, buying new makes sense. In late 2016 we needed another car and were looking at late model used Camrys. The short of it is, we found a new year end Camry for less than a thousand bucks more than some 2014 and 2015 LE's we were looking at. For that additional cost, we got a lower insurance rate, the full warranty including a first year's worth of maintenance, and while we don't finance vehicles, the interest on new vehicles that are financed is usually lower than on a used vehicle.

True! ...I'm not sure there's even a used 2018 or 2019 to be had in my area, but I'm sure the price wouldn't have been much less than new. The thing is, I didn't want 2018 or 2019 anyway - I've read about acceleration issues with those.

Post-retirement, my parents have been the other part of the equation. They slightly used, low mileage cars you guys are buying come from them.
They choose to save money in other ways, I guess. They are doing better in retirement (nearly 20 years now) than they were when they were working. No mortgage, kids are long out of the house and financially independent, etc., they never go on vacation, and so forth.
Everyone wastes some money, I guess that's how they choose to do it. Of course, they do get a good chunk back at the end too, so I have no idea what the practical effect of that is.

Financing rates are a good point. Back in 2000, i went out looking for a late model used mazda protege. I found several, but ultimately bought new because the total cost for new (sum of payments) was less for a higher end model new than for the used because they were offering 0% financing. On a related note, 0%financing is why my dad bought a 2001 Z3 3.0, which i now own.

I've only bought new once. It was a minivan and a good decision. Other than that I've gotten used.

Yep, my first new car. I'm also not a fan of the computer screen stuff, but I guess I'll get used to it. Congrats on your first new car! I don't buy new cars any more, either, but what if everyone stopped buying them!? I certainly don't have a problem with others buying them! It helps keep the economy moving. If it has Apple Car play, you may just end up loving that computer screen stuff.
