Ok, based on the comments so far I've tried Jack Green label (found it a bit smoother that 7), Maker's Mark (meh), and now Evan Williams white label stuff. I think this is leading the pack for my pedestrian palate.

The trick is, to drink it slow enough to taste it.
Stuff a couple ice cubes in the glass and just take your time.

Ice and Ol’ No 7 hits the spot. Litre bottles are on a special deal for Father’s Day in the UK. Edit. It’s warm here at the moment. As a Scots Scotch drinker I wouldn’t add ice to whisky. I will add it to whiskey.

I sure like it. Especially over a couple ice cubes. Perfect for sitting out on the pier watching a sun set

Anyone ever had Ten High? Me and some buddies drank some when we were pretty young. I don't remember if we took shots of it, or mixed it. I don't even remember if we were 21.
I was just curious if it's swill, or not. It's funny, I haven't even thought about Ten High since then, and it just popped into my head while reading this thread.

Evan Williams fan here. It’s really good for the price. I think you have to go up the $40 a bottle for better bourbon.

Basil Hayden’s and 1 giant ice cube.

Anyone ever had Ten High? There was a time I drank a bit of it. Also a bit of Echo Spring (bourbon) and Old Overholt (rye). As far as being swill or not, well, it's cheap. I remember thinking back then that cheap bourbon was better than most other cheap stuff.

I'm a Makers guy. I like Woodford, too and in a pinch a little sip of Jim Beam. I find JD to be a little harsh for me but I keep a bottle around mostly for guests and I do use it for cooking because a few of my BBQ recipes call for bourbon.

I kind of agree with the standard Maker's but I really like Maker's 46.

I'm not there yet as far as drinking neet or on the rocks. I have found Canada Dry ginger ale is a good medium that works nicely with whiskey/bourbon, at least to my palate. So far I really like Evan Williams White label/bottled in bond the best. I think aiming for a higher shelf while mixing would probably be silly.

Outside of Buffalo Trace's top shelf Bourbons, I like Ezra Brooks. It is charcoal filtered after it is aged as opposed to JD which is filtered off the still. Makes it very smooth. Bottled at 90 proof and drinks like a 60 or 70 proof. Has a good flavor profile.
I switched from Evan Williams after a taste testing session several years ago.
E Brooks is at a price point where I can drink two in a setting without breaking the budget.

I drink all sorts of brands of bourbon whiskey and whisky; preferring variety over consistency. For me, all the top shelf offerings are good but I’ll choose No. 7 when I seek a little extra “bite”.

So doing some poking around I saw a recommendation for "Old Forester". I'm glad I only bought a small bottle.
Evan Williams BiB for the win thus far.

I bought some Elijah Craig Small Batch for the 1st time recently. VERY good on a little ice.
