I had no idea that Australia is home to about a million feral camels. I think Aussie I picture kangaroos and koalas.

The really sad part is that it appears that all the fires were set by people. Nearly 200 arrests now reported...24 people charged with intentionally setting the fires, and the rest for fire violations.

Although those statistics may or may not be technically correct, it doesn't come anywhere near the reality of the situation. I believe many of the charges and arrests are simply a knee-jerk reaction, but to say more would lead me straight into DOB territory.

There will be complete species of flora and fauna made extinct by the time this is over. Very sad indeed.
The first camels were imported during early exploration of the continent for their ability to traverse our vast deserts. We have annual camel races in Central Australia.

...and Australia is only at the mid point of summer, so, sadly, there's probably more to come..

A truly sad situation. I've spent my whole life being a koala fan (from very early childhood). I have always wanted to see one in person...scary that they, along with other species, could end up extinct because of this. I saw a report the other day that the eucalyptus trees burn hot and fast because of the oils.
My daughter (no pix) is going down to study in Newcastle this spring (fall for them). We are planning on a two week trip to visit and do some sightseeing, but with the fires we may cancel that.
