Have you guys had good luck having a tube amp shipped? Do they remove the tubes, or take any precautions like that?
I'm ready to seriously start looking for a Fender Concert, but I'm nervous about the shipping process.
Any successes, or nightmares?
Thanks!

I've had several tube amps shipped over the years, including some from the US, and I've never had any problems. Most people reckon you should at least take the valves out and wrap them in bubble wrap or the like for safety.

Thanks for the reply!
Doesn't the amp have to be rebiased or something if you remove then replace the tubes, even if the same ones?

Good question , and one I've never considered, as I'm a plug and play kinda guy ;-)
I woulda thought that if all the valves go back in the correct order, there would be no need to re-bias, but I've never re-biased an amp in my life.
I'm sure someone will come along with the answer soon ;-)

There is no need to bias the amp.
It should be packed for a drop... cuz it will happen. And the shipper should not use styrofoam p-nuts. They’re a mess and the amp settles through them any ways.
If they state they’ll “have it professionally packed,” that’s code for, “I’m taking it to the ups store where they will sell me an expensive, oversized box and fill it with foamy nuts.”

I've received, and shipped, several tube amps over the years. Never had a problem. Double-boxing with bubble wrap is certainly a good method. And, yes...removing and wrapping the tubes in bubble wrap independently is also an excellent idea.

make sure who you buy from knows how to pack one and if not be prepared to give them detailed packing instructions. another was is to have the UPS store pack it, they'll be responsible for any damage, though you'll pay a premium. I've bought and sold a zillion vintage tube amps over the years, only had an issue once when a guy sent me a poorly packed old Fender and the particle board baffle and cabninet was shattered. but the real nightmare was when UPS shipped it back to him, he had my $ and the amp and it took me 6 months to get it back from him, but that's another story for another day.

Thanks again everybody. I guess I'm going to roll the dice and order. It sounds like for the most part the odds are in my favor!

Hate to admit but one nightmare here. I purchased a used Fender 100T bass head from a music store in Texas. The box showed up obliterated and the head was literally rolling out of it as delivered on my garage floor. Oh it was wrapped in bubble xxxx but unsecured to device. I should have documented and sent it back on principle alone. Other than a few damaged fender knobs it works fine. Don’t assume everyone has shipping dept. experience. Assume all delivery drivers have short track experience. Just my 2 cents.

My Fender Concert is supposed to be here today, I'm crossing my fingers it arrives safely.

What year did you get? Regardless I'm sure it will sound stellar!

It made it! I checked all the functions and it performed flawlessly. It's a 1993-95 era. I could have gone with an earlier Rivera era, but the whole reason I started looking into these is because I really liked the sound of my friends, his is from 1994. So why reinvent the wheel, ya know. It sounds fantastic, its got the sound I was looking for, and holy moly, its LOUD!

Glad it made it safely!
You know, Gibson P90s sound mighty righteous through that amp.

I've shipped and received several vintage amps over the years fully assembled and tubed with no issues whatsoever. I always wrap the amps in shrink or bubble wrap and double box if I have to use peanuts. I try not to use peanuts. One packing material that works is shredded paper but it is a bit heavier than peanuts so shipping cost is higher.

However you buy it, "negotiate" how they ship as well. I used to buy and sell amps pretty regularly. Yes, I wrapped them in bubble wrap, numbered them, and put numbers on the socket I pulled it from. Never had a problem.

Glad yours is safe- I’ve had one issue, a ‘64 Princeton 6G2 that arrived on its back and the speaker having ripped from the baffle, most likely dropped. Ended up having to make a replacement wood baffle for it to use it. Not a huge deal but hated to lose the original. Those Concerts are nice, have fun!

I shipped a Blues Jr from Florida to Ohio twice with no problem. I just removed the tubes and put them bubble wrap envelopes. I"ve also bought two amps shipped to me. One them needed a new rectifier tube when arrived but it was no big deal.

I have purchased many amps online and have yet to receive one without the toobs installed ready to plug and play. New, used, vintage, boutique, whatever.
