Been there, done that, got the souvenir. And I've tried everything to prevent them. Citrus, cranberry juice and extract pills, limiting coffee and red meat. Done the lithotripsy, both outside and in. Nowadays I pass some significant stones without pain or forewarning.
Ok, so I've cut back on the alcohol. So I guess I'll go make myself a chickentail.

Cranberry juice is contraindicated for kidney stone sufferers. It is high in oxalate which promotes stones. It’s good for preventing UTIs, but not for stones.

But probably why it never seemed to work for me.

But probably why it never seemed to work for me. It's a very common misconception because its so effective for urinary tract infections. I should have said, it depends on the type of stones you are generating as well. Mine are uric acid stones, for which cranberry juice is contraindicated. YSMV.
