He has risen in my esteem these last few years as I have come to appreciate great riffs over great shredding, and JP came up with some killer riffs. Hell of a Rock producer, too.

The fact that I still love listening to Led Zeppelin proves my allegiance. The solos on Good Times, Bad Times and pretty much the rest of Led Zep I still amaze me.

I'm surprised to learn he's 16 years older than I am. He wears it well.

Oh, what can I say about Monsieur James Patrick... One of the giants that still walk on the surface of the Earth.
I love Zep so much that I got some of their early 70s stuff tattooed on my shoulder.
Very few things were as "Rock and Roll" as their Denmark Radio gig back in '69, and it is interesting to notice that back then Page DID shred a lot, and refined his compositions by basing them more on riffs than on miraculous solos... It's his style, and many don't understand it and call him sloppy. To each his own.
Happy Birthday, Pagey, and if you please, get that last reunion going ASAP, will you?
Yours,
S.

Definitely a rock icon. I still enjoy listening to his work as much now as I did when it was released. Also a master in the production end too. Happy Birthday, Mr. Page!

I basically wrote off Zeppelin years ago due to their habit of blatant plagiarism, but have recently come to appreciate their appropriations and stellar arrangements. And as noted, great riffs trump shredding(super fast noodling) anyday. And Bohnam is by far the best of the rock drummers,IMO. I still wish they had just acknowledged their sources of inspiration.

My favourite guitarist of all time, and probably the reason I wanted to play guitar.
Happy Birthday JP. :-)

Some would say he plays like a drunken sailor, unstructured and undisciplined, which is exactly why he occupies my personal top ten list of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Happy 76th Pagey!

Well, let's talk about how sloppy he really is..
Tea For One? Since I Been Loving You? Ten Years Gone? No Quarter? The Ocean? The Song Remains The Same?
Let's hear some of YOUR sloppy playing!
Right up there with Hendrix.

I saw him live. It was 55 years ago this summer. I did not know then I would be alive today to remember or I would have paid more attention. What I remember today is it was outdoors and loud.

That first album was IMO one of the greatest guitar albums period. The tones, use of reverb, the use of the wah the dynamics, etc. I agree with the shredding. He blazed major and minor pentatonic scales as fast as modern shedders do the melodic minor.
What I think a lot of modern guitarists lack is the musical dynamics on the guitar he and his era used.
The guitar was a dominating instrument, seen just like horns or piano and people played as such. (i.e with the same expectations in respect to the song/musical piece)
I hear them playing parts the horns would have played or the piano (you name it)

Certainly it was a clap of thunder that brought those guys together. Jimmy was the perfect guitarist in that exquisite rock Chickentail.
Edit: I had no desire to say Chickentail, but either my computer, Chrome, or this web site knows better. I was trying to use the term for a mixed drink...

On the other hand, Chickentail is definitely a thing now.

My opinion on Page being sloppy.
He did so much studio overdubs and did them well, he could not recreate it live. Then he would randomly play different parts live, keeping the main groove and riff going.
I always thought he should have hired several studio musicians to play along back stage, but that would have ruined the jams that they were known for.
Much respect and HBD

Amazing that he can still stand up after playing those heavy LP's and double-necks for all these years...
....can't deny LZ's greatness and musical impact.

Back in the day, I liked most of Led Zepplin's stuff but can't say I was ever really a fan of just Page. I liked them as a collective whole.

He looks a whole lot better at 76 than Keith Richards does. For that matter, there are a lot of musicians older than Keith that look better than he does. It's not the age, it's the mileage.
