I was working in my garage on some new runners for a pal's old rocking chair that need replacing. I'm running a router, and my neighbor walked up the driveway and asked me this question.
They've been renting for the last several months while their other house was being rebuilt following a bad fire on the 2nd floor. They're in the process of moving back to the house. He's the music director at a large church, and his wife is a music teacher in the county school system.
Me: "A harpsichord? You mean...like Lurch on The Addams Family?"
He: "Yeah. It's a kit...I got it many years ago, it's still in the box, and I never got around to putting it together. The guy I got it from got it in 1972 [!!!] and he gave it to me. I figured I'll never have the time or the knowhow to do it, and I was going to haul it to the landfill but then I thought 'I'll bet Geno would like this'."
Me, thinking: this must be some kind of small tabletop thing that might be fun to do. "Sure. I'll take it. I'll put it together and give it back to you when it's done." He said no--I could keep it. Okay.
We walked to his garage and there's the box leaning against the wall. It's as tall as I am (six and a half feet), 40" wide, and 6" thick. It weighs about 150 lbs. Me: "Um...that is huge."
It was made by Zuckermann in Philadelphia in the 1970s. I have not popped it open yet, but I looked online and these things are highly regarded by harpsichord players. So now I have another project. I've done repairs on peeanners before, but I've never had my hands on a harpsichord. Should be fun.

I got the neck fitted and glued in today. Tomorrow morning I'll get it lightly sanded, masked off, and maybe shoot some primer.

You have three months and a few days before Halloween. Can it be done?

LOL! Right!
I have waaaay too many other projects and priorities in the queue right now to even want to open the box and look at the contents. I barely have room to store the thing; my shop is a small one-car garage.
If you're unfamiliar about how a harpsichord works--it's more akin to a harp (plucked strings) than a piano (hammered strings). Each string course has a plectrum; when you hit a key, it plucks 'em.

When I was eight, I thought the John Astin version of Gomez Addams was so cool I taught myself to stand on my head as he often did reading the morning paper. I'm pretty sure I couldn't do it anymore.

That was a wonderful show. It was so different from other sitcoms of the day (The Munsters, Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, I Dream of Genie, etc.) in that it wasn't simple goofy physical comedy. The humor was far more sophisticated; it made you think. John Astin was *great* as Gomez. The movie franchise that followed came nowhere close. Those were unwatchable. I made this up a long time ago and had it on the wall in my office at work for many years:
